Louisiana with the same government as Florida or Texas?

It seems clear to me that whatever Florida and Texas are doing in terms of their approach to Government seems to be working very well; much better than what Louisiana is doing. You could say that Florida has it great because of their state’s proximity to the ocean. However, most of Texas isn’t near the ocean and Texas is thriving too. Why doesn’t Louisiana change it’s approach toward a better model that people want to come here to live? Sure, it gets hot in the summer; but no hotter than Texas and Florida. The Fall, and. Spring aren’t bad in Louisiana and in the winter you can walk outside in shorts by Noon on most days. Just asking why shouldn’t we do that? I do know property taxes in both Tex and Fla. are very high in comparison. However, they have no income tax.

Louisiana could be like Georgia or NC if it’s government had their shite together. Comparing a state of Louisiana’s size to TX & FL is like comparing LSU to ULM & La Tech.

Louisiana has been a “red state” for years and the same issues remain. Both US Senators are Republican and 5 of 6 Representatives are Republican. Republicans controlled everything for 5 continuous years.

Louisiana’s problems are systemic and decades in the making.

And locally? City councils? Mayors?

The ghost of Huey long and the stink of Edwin Edwards will never leave the State.

Been saying this for years. The politicians, injury attorneys, and litter are all symptoms of the actual problem.

Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia are all kicking just as much arse as Texas and Florida, but no one ever talks about them. Hopefully it stays that way.

Have to model Louisiana's Constitution after Texas' and be prepared to totally reshape control the role of government and how it relates to citizens and vice versa.

Would be a monumental task and quite the mountain pass to traverse. The resistance would be massive.

Never going to happen unless we get rid of all of these corrupt politicians. They’re all corrupt in this state, Republicans and Democrats

I think a better comparison would be South Carolina to Louisiana. Texas and Florida are too large and really unique onto themselves.

Similar population. Similar demographics. Louisiana actually has a higher "GDP" per capita. But somehow South Carolina seems like a much nicer state than Louisiana, politically, and culturally, and economically.

Maybe it is just South Carolina propaganda.

Well Texas has 29 million people. Florida has 21 million. Not quite the same either.

IDK. I’m from BR. Know a lot of people. I sell transparency software to local governments. Sell a shitload in TX and Florida, and very little in LA. It stinks.

We have several built in advantages. We have multiple cities along our coastline that each offer a unique experience: Myrtle Beach is the middle lower middle class tourist/amusement park area with some golf that attracts primarily northeasterners with kids and with some retirees mixed in. Charleston attracts a higher dollar traveler and we get a lot of bachelorette parties and a shitton of weddings. We get a lot of late 20s to early 30s who either haven’t started a family or just started a family mixed with soon to be or just retired folks looking to enjoy their golden years. We draw from pretty much everywhere north of MDL. Hilton Head is a Yankee retirement home/golf getaway.

Having I-95 being far enough inland has started really helping smaller towns along the way (Dillon is fixing to boom with their inland port). People who come down from the Midwest travel down 77 and sprinkle money all over the Midlands. Aiken has benefitted from being across the river from Augusta. The upstate is in the foothills of the mountain and has easy access to two major cities without having to deal with them on a daily basis.

In the last 15 years, our state has added a huge aviation plant and two automobile manufacturers (one of which has about 40% of its total planned workforce online so far) and built a new port. Going back 15 years prior to that we added our first automobile manufacturing center. We already have an incredibly diverse economy and we haven’t even put our feet in the water yet with tech companies.

Louisiana needs to find business savvy politicians that put your economy first, infrastructure a close second, and let the rest sort itself out. Without a strong economy, you can fund infrastructure improvements and maintenance and without strong infrastructure, you really can’t do much of anything else.

Great post.

But I think the problem is we can't find business savvy politicians because our electorate won't vote for them or our special interest groups will frick them. Yet the demographically similar population on the surface is just that. There is fundamentally something deviant on average amongst Louisianians of both races.

You answered your own question.

I’ve moved between LA and TX multiple times. Every time we move to TX it’s like getting a huge raise. Quality of life is better in just about every category.
