Looking at the old baseball clip posted, it reminds me that I’ve noticed plenty of older clips, polls, announcers (most recently Verne) etc would always refer to us as the now almost defunct, “Louisiana St.” as opposed to “LSU.” When did the “LSU” abbreviation become more commonplace and generally accepted than “Louisiana St?”

I’d imagine early 90s, but it wasn’t really until 20 years ago that it was more official when branding became important. Football got away from the big endzones and went to the Geaux font.

Late 1970s is when they started putting LSU on the football helmets. Maybe, that contributed???

This probably has the most to do with it. LSU rolls off the tongue much easier, smaller to print, etc.

Baseball America still refers to LSU as Louisiana State.

Verne would say the full school name during touchdowns most of the time no matter who the school was.

As someone who was not born in Louisiana or has ever lived in Louisiana, but has become a huge LSU fan, my question is, when did the fanbase drop the official nickname of Fighting Tigers in favor of the more ubiquitous name of Tigers?

Fighting Tigers is what separates LSU from every other Tiger team out there.

I would like to see the baseball team wearing a jersey where the words Fighting Tigers are written in cursive across the front. Think that would be an awesome look.

Fighting Tigers originated from Louisiana Tigers, confederate shock troops. Probably not going to be very popular these days, sadly.

Are we the only state school that abbreviates our name? Guess I never thought about it

More likely to see jerseys with “Non-Binary Tigers” across the front given the current state of the university admins

Love when Verne would say “ taking on the fighting Tigers of Louisiana state.”

How old are you?

I promise you that LSU has always been called LSU, since before Huey Long was governor. And my wife has a photo of her dad as a freshman in 1954 wearing a sweater that says LSU. And I went to LSU in the 80's and I can promise you that we were referred to in the media as LSU. The endzones have always said LSU.

Not sure I understand anything about your post.

Again, wrong. The official nickname is Tigers.

Fighting Tigers is an unofficial nickname.

Bengals is nowhere to be found.

You people.

Negative. In print media we were always referred to Louisiana St. until LSU made a concerted effort to brand LSU. I think it was early 80s. I might have been in the 70s, though.

wrong. "Fight for LSU" our official fight song was written in the 40's. The name LSU has been used by LSU students and fans for many decades. I have many prints of the name LSU used by the school and also news articles from back before 1950's. When I was growing up in the 60's I never heard anyone from Louisiana call LSU anything but LSU. Also Vern pissed off a lot of us by referring to LSU as Louisiana State.
