You're misunderstanding Saban's point. The Star isn't playing the Sam position. He's basically an extra CB/Safety who blitzes and if you play an extra DB you have to take a LB off the field, and it's the Sam who goes.

[

They even refer to the player as the star cornerback.

How Nick Saban has used the Star to keep Alabama Football ahead of the curve

Yes, but Baker's defense operates with a Star on the field the majority of the time and no Sam.

You're either going to have a Sam or Star and Perkins played those positions the majority of the time last season, after the Florida State game. This year he is playing Will.

Sidewalk doesn’t understate basic football terminology or what anything means. He just makes shite up and throws tantrums.

True, but they are different positions. Read the article I linked, the Star position replaces the Sam but is very different.

He doesn’t underrated what you’re saying. If you put his thoughts into practical situations on the field you’d have 3 LBs all playing on the same side with nobody on the other. He doesn’t know what he’s saying.

Perkins played outside every game (except for Florida State) last year and this board complained about it incessantly.

People need to just understand that Arkansas game was probably a career outing for him, rather than being the norm.
Perkins played really good last year, the problem was that he didn't have many great players around him. It's not just that he was a freshman that he went off, it was also because we had the defensive players to lock their spots so he could do his thing. That defense finished 32nd in pass defense. The year before, they finished 81st.

I think a position switch to a hybrid role to get the Weeks brothers on the field will do wonders for Perkins. It will put more people to look for while Perk can attack, and also make plays in the middle like he did vs Mizzou last year.

So he played both Star and Sam last year? Because as you stated, those are two different positions.

I get that.

My point is that Baker's defense rarely utilizes a Sam linebacker so Star is "his version" of a Sam, that isn't technically 100% correct but it's a dumbed down version.

House's defense obviously did utilize a Sam and Perkins played in that role for the majority of the 2023 season.

Star has become the most overused term on this board.

No, LSU didn't technically have a Star last year.

Burns played more of a traditional safety role and Perkins played Sam.

You said

Star is just basically Sam

And then just now acknowledged that Star and Sam are two very different positions. So him playing Star this year is not the same as him playing Sam last year.

Sam in House's defense and Star in Baker's are very similar roles.

There are obviously technical differences that football savants will understand, the average fan isn't going to suddenly see some massive difference from how he was used in 2023 though.

He’s lying like always Sam means strong side, you can look at our depth chart and see Star is weak side, and if he’d ever played or watched a sport in his life he’d know this

I don't believe LSU's depth chart actually differentiates, it just lists them as linebackers.

I still have only a hazy understanding of the star position. Half safety and half linebacker? Mostly safety?

The way I understand it is sort of the way Clemson used Isaiah Simmons in 2019.

Makes a ton of sense for this game, South Carolina has struggled both throwing the ball and running with their backs consistently until now so they're basically just going to use Perkins to neutralize Sellers' legs.

Very similar setup to the 2022 Arkansas game where he had a career day.

Star is differentiated from linebackers on the depth chart.
