Little Big Man: LSU pitcher Ma'Khail Hilliard cuts batters down to size

Ok, so his nickname is officially Mooch Flatliner.
quote:
There has to be a laundry list of people stunned that a 149-pound freshman phenom leads the Southeastern Conference in earned run average.
quote:
Shawn Bates: "When Ma'Khail was 5 years old, I told his dad, 'He's going to be THE one,'" Bates said.
quote:
"He was just born with an ability to spin the breaking ball," Raley said. "He’s got a fast arm, quick twitch muscles, and he creates some good angles. He's one of those little guys who the baseball gods blessed with a big arm."
quote:
"If people do (underestimate Hilliard), that's their own fault," LSU sophomore starting pitcher Zack Hess said. "He plays a lot bigger than he looks. He's got big-time stuff."
quote:
"I was long tossing with Ma'Khail one day," recalled LSU senior pitcher/first baseman Austin Bain, "and he was throwing sliders from like 200 feet away. I'm like, 'What is this?" I've never thrown with anybody before with such a natural cut."
quote:
With the graduation of Hunter Newman and Hess moving from a reliever to starter, Mainieri had no returning closer. The first time Mainieri saw Hilliard's razor-sharp curve in fall practice, he mentally penciled him in as a closer. Yet pitching coach Alan Dunn told Mainieri to keep Hilliard in mind as a potential starter
quote:
His father Keith remembered the day when little Ma'Khail, whom he's nicknamed "Mooch" after former Auburn and NBA guard Moochie Norris, was at Baton Rouge's Independence Park half-watching one of his brothers play a T-ball game.
A well-meaning bystander saw Ma'Khail flipping his plastic ball in the air and hitting it, so he decided to give him a hand.
"Hey, little man, let me throw you the ball," said the good Samaritan, grabbing the ball and taking a pitching spot just 10 feet from Ma'Khail.
Keith Hilliard didn't have time to warn the do-gooder he needed to back away even further.
"Mooch smacked the guy right in the face with a line drive," Keith said. "All I could do was apologize."[quote]
[quote]His baseball coaches through the years agree that his unruffled mound presence – an admiring McClure called Hilliard "a flatliner" because he played like he had no pulse – distinguished him from other pitchers along with his killer curveball.
quote:
I'm watching (from directly behind Hilliard) from the outfield," LSU center fielder Zach Watson said, "and every pitch he throws looks like a curveball. Then, he throws his curveball and it's like a major league curve."
quote:
Hilliard said he's eating 2,000 calories per meal but has yet to gain weight.
quote:
"Ma'Khail does it the way he's supposed to do it," Mainieri said. "He has a lot of self-confidence, he's pretty unflappable and he raises his game when he gets in jams. But he doesn't show up his opponents. He has great class. "I love him."
Ok, so his nickname is officially Mooch Flatliner.

This simply isnt possible, unless he's eating 1 meal a day.

Does LSU ever use the trackman to put out spin rates on pitchers? I'd be curious to see what his is.

Nice article. Thanks for posting it.

They really only publish exit velo, and on HRs they do launch angle.
I wish they gave us more.

From the article:
quote:
Which is consistently a large majority, thanks to his even temperament and an excessively wicked curveball with a major league spin rate of 3200 rpm.

quick twitch muscles,
Haha that part reminded me of a Bill Burr bit about white sports commentators and black athletes.

The guy has poise, skills, and instincts if he ever gets to 170 lbs and generate the fast ball like Ron Guidry used to look out.

He was clocked throwing low 90's fastball at the Sam Houston state playoff game last year. He's got the arm already. I think Dunn has backed him off maxing it out everytime bc he just doesn't need it at this point. I'm really not sure why but he had better fastball velocity in high school. That's from the guy at Sam Houston running the gun.

Yeah, looking at MLB articles, seems the BEST MLB pitchers only spin it at 3000-3100 or so.

I doubt he is actually eating 6,000 caliries per day, but it’s very common that some young men can eat 4,000 or 5,000 caliries per day and not gain weight.
Keep doing that and it will eventually catch up with you, though.

The weight and strength will come. I would eat a large pizza and a 6 pack of beer for dinner in college and lose weight somehow.
Now if I just look at a cheeseburger from across the room my belt tightens.

Phelps was eating 8-10,000 a day.
Granted, Hilliard isn't swimming a mile every day like Phelps, but still, it is possible.
6,000 isn't out of the question.

It is the truth, as a kid in my 20's back in the day as a former athlete myself, I would eat all day and not gain shite. Large meals at every interval of morning, noon, and evening with snacks in between all the time. Those of us with super high metabolisms burn off calories quickly, but the advances today in sports medicine and nutrition should help him whereas there was nothing like that for me in my day.
