Interesting Super Bowl Rosters Stat:

Leonard Fournette was the ONLY 5* recruit in the game (LSU, #GeauxTigers).

ETA: apparently Watkins & Jones were also 5* but weren't listed in radio segment when I heard it. Apologies.

Tampa Bay had 8 players rated 4*, 12 players rated 3*, + 22 players below a 3*.

KC had 12 players rated 4*, 10 players rated 3*, + 19 players below a 3*.

Very interesting to look at when you consider the numbers of 5* + 4* recruits that litter Top 10 P5 CFB Rosters & the numbers of National Titles/CFP Appearances/NY6 Bowl Appearances.

Wasn't Sammy Watkins a 5* recruit? And Chris Jones?

My theory about 5 star recruits and their development or lack thereof is you would think you would have more than 1 in the SB but I believe kids that are great in HS, come into college with many expectations and they tend to survive on talent alone. Other kids who are not 5* lack the coaching and opportunities but as they get it in college, they show they can be just as good as most 5* athletes, once they get coached up and mature to realize their full potential. Most who are able to play at the next level, ie college or the pros are probably all capable of being higher graded athletes coming out of HS. Some of it is just being in the right place at the right time and getting the exposure that most of those 5* athletes get. That’s why you see the big disparity in star rankings in the pro’s. Also, there is such a smaller percentage of 5* athletes which, statistically, makes your argument valid.

i'm glad for fournette. but, i can't understand how, when he was at lsu, he was so damn electric that it was astonishing. moves, power, speed.......

what happened?

did he suffer from an injury that i'm not aware of?

I'm assuming the OP just meant guys who appeared in the game, but still, it didn't sound right that Fournette would be the ONLY 5 star recruit to appear.

Fournette NEVER had great vision at LSU. If/when the OL created a seam where the play was supposed to go then LF was able to hit it and display the exceptional speed/power. In the NFL they competition is much better and much more disciplined. They fill the gaps playside more times than not and LF has never been a great cutback runner.

Vision is the most underrated aspect of great RB's. It's not Fournette's strongest attribute.

Jaguars happened. They’ll kill the best of anyone’s career. They are the new Browns.

Radio must've had it wrong then. No mention of Sammy or Chris Jones.

Now post the PERCENTAGE of 5, 4, 3 star etc... That were in the game. Also, has been posted, there were 3 or 4 5 stars in the game, not just Fournette.

I understand the inclination to play "gotcha" with the star gazing. We love the underdog. And yes, some 5 stars COMPLETELY bomb out, and some Hesters and Mathieus go on to be stars. But you are kidding yourself if you think you win titles without a healthy dose of 4 and 5 stars on your roster.

There are 32 five stars each year and hundreds of four star players. Ignoring the several other five star players in the superbowl, you would expect five star players to be in the minority. It’s called statistics.

Correct. The wrongs get all the headlines but the recruiting rankings are right more than they are wrong.

For instance, very rarely do people talk about Trevor Lawrence’s recruiting ranking because he was rated the best coming out of high school and he is still the best, but almost every time Justin Jefferson’s name is mentioned one of the first things people say is he was a 3 star recruit.

There are only 300 five stars to choose from in the last 10 years.

The fact that 3 or 4 made it into this game is impressive actually.

You have thousands of 4 stars and tens of thousands of 3 stars. Of course you are going to have more on the field

Take a random 300 sample size of the 20 or 30 thousand 3 stars in the last decade and see how many you get,

And yet I would be willing to bet that 5*s make the SB at a higher proportional rate than 4*s, who make the SB at a higher proportional rate than 3*s, who make the SB at a higher proportional rate than 2*s and unrated kids.

The difference is that there are only 32 5*s each year, as compared to hundreds of 4*s and thousands of 3*s and under.

So may kids develop later and overcome athletic shortcomings with hard work. Interesting to see how it all shakes out by the time everyone is in their early-mid 20's vs. projections of 17-18 yr olds.

Side note: I thought it was funny early in the game when they said LF didn't have the breakaway speed that the other RB did.

you see less 5 star talent in Super Bowls because less of it exist. You only have 25-30 5 stars in a given recruiting year. even if 50% make it to the league you get 12-15 5 stars per year end up in the league.

Yeah, it's probably something like 20% of 5* do about as well as 10% of 4* and 5% of 3*, or something like that.
