I think the 2022 secondary had more question marks than 2023, and they were more than serviceable!

Bernard-Converse was a veteran player who had performed well in the Big 12. Garner had SEC size and, if nothing else, had a lot of college experience. At safety Brooks and Foucher had a ton of SEC experience. Ultimately, the Safety position was ok and CB was better than expected. Particularly given both CBs were reliable for a team that didn't have a ton of depth.

Alexander has the size. But it is a big jump from SLU to LSU. Chestnut was solid at Syracuse, but isn't coming in with quite the bona-fides Bernard-Converse brought. One advantage the 2023 team may have is more depth with Welch and Harris. Both COULD be really good...we just don't know yet.

At Safety there is at least some continuity with Burns, Brooks, and Ryan returning. None of that group is in the Delpit, Adams, Matheiu etc category. But you hope their experience is enough to make them a solid unit.

The secondary is the biggest question mark on the team. It's unrealistic to expect them to be great. But they will have to be, at least, good enough. Otherwise, LSU may find themselves in more than a few shoot-outs.

I'm not worried about the CB position at all. We have plenty of guys that can plug at the position to find 2 - 3 guys that can get it done. Don't sleep on Taviano to be a starter by the middle of the season as a true Freshman.

I'm also good with the starting safeties, but I'm a little worried about the depth at this position. If we stay healthy in the secondary, I rather the unit much more than I feel confident in the DE position, which I think is our weakest link. Hopefully we can blitz with Perkins or other LBs, or even CB and S blitzes to help get pressure on the QB to help with the secondary's coverage.

Chestnut is better than sage , wouldn’t surprise me to see him start at nickel with Alexander and Welch on the outside

Burns needs to stay healthy. Speed at corner is better this year , hopefully it shows. Someone has to step up at the other safety position and nickle. Important year for Sage IMO. We will know by the third quarter of FSU if this is a work in progress or solid group. They will be tested downfield and in the slot on third downs early in that game. HP7 in the middle will stop their QB from escaping from pressure.

Duce chestnut is a name you are going to hear a lot about. Baller imo.

Between Duce, Harris, and Welch I really believe those are going to be the top three corners this year. I really like Welch's potential and has had a fantastic spring and summer to this point and put on weight.

Why do people say this! If Welch is better than the other guys and buys in to what the coaches want then he will play if he doesn’t play then it’s because he’s not the best option or he has issues!

The front 7 is the best friends of the CB’s. We have the makings of a great group there. House will dial up pressure as needed. Read up on the transfers from Oregon St, Texas and Syracuse. Speights, Oghoufo and Chestnut, all three of those guys would have been starting at the schools they came from. Kelly and staff were very selective, it looks to have paid off.

I thought Toviano moved to safety in the spring?

At CB we have the guys to match up & cover (in no particular order):
Harris
Johnson
Chestnut
Alexander
Toviano
Welch
They need to understand their assignments and communicate. FSU will test them. A persistent pass-rush in the face of Travis will be essential to success.

The more reps this unit gets, the better they will be in 23.

That is all coach speak from Kelly. Did he not raid the portal for a bunch of CB last year, including our 2 starters Bernard-Converse from Okie St. and Garner from UL, plus all the backups.

The list up there is way stronger in talent than 2022 CB and there is a lot of experience.

I like Welch and Harris to start with Toviano and Ty first off the bench, then 3rd. string is Johnson who was a starter at Ohio State, and Deuce Chestnut who was a starter at Syracuse. That is a lot of talent! Then we have some talented freshmen.

Some of those guys play nickel, so I am not worried about the secondary because we also have 2 starters at Safety and Ryan and Matt L. off the bench and a couple of strong arse recruits. Our whole secondary will be fine

The pressure created by Wingo, Smith & Perkins will make the secondary perform above their head.

Oghoufo

This guy jumps off the tape when watching his work ethics. He could be someone who surprises early. He just has the athleticism to play at the next level.

From what I have read about the guy, the top end athleticism is what he lacks.

I'd love to be wrong but he reminds me of a Jermariah Rasco type. A guy that can be counted on but not someone that is going to overwhelm the opponent.

Alexander is legit. Toviano will see SIGNIFICANT snaps all over the field.

I'm much more worried about LB outside of Perkins than the secondary. I think the secondary will be pretty dang good.

Mason requiring double team will help with this.

Why, your leading tackler from the returning guys Penn is back. You went got one of best LB’s from another school, a starter. With House as LB Coach and DC, why would you worry?
