He still had to burn 2 timeouts early in the first half, one during the scripted portion. Can’t get the play in on time still. Having those timeouts at the end of the half would have made a huge difference. Adams gets hurt and we put Chester in at LT and he immediately calls a run behind Chester who is our worst OL, for a negative play. With all of the weapons at WR, he made no effort to get the ball to the WRs in the first half. Everything was to Sharp and Green. We attempted multiple deep passes to them and none to Brown and Hilton. The 4th down play call to Hilton at the end of the 2nd quarter was terrible. If you’re going to call that play, throw that to Zavion, AA, JJ, or Brown. Running that play to Hilton was idiotic. At the end of the game, we had 2 possessions where all we needed was one first down to ice the game and we couldn’t do it. Sloan still has a long way to go. Once again, we dominated the stat sheet in yards and TOP and we couldn’t score and had to hang on.

Consider that entering the game there were questions about the OL. So part of the offensive game plan was to throw exactly those short passes, letting the WR's speed get the extra yards. Give Nuss those 30+ yards taken away from the blown TD pass & he'd have had close to 300 yards passing. Giving that it's not a stretch to say that this offense could have scored 27 points with 300+ passing yards against this Clemson team on the road & I'll take Coach Sloan's play calling all year long.

Not every single call is going to work but he did a great job mixing up looks, getting our guys the ball with space and mixing up the run game
He had the screen game just cooking them. I did not have that on my bingo card before the game. The one that was whistled dead was probably a TD and the receiver knew it. He was fricking pissed when he heard the whistle.
This is the frustration with Sloan. He does shite like this and then goes in a shell or gets too cute. He can be effective. He just needs to be for entire games.

I’m convinced some of yall don’t know what gamelan is
The gamelan was to obviously get quick throws because deep down Kelly really thought we wouldn’t be able to block them

2019 LSU made their money on the 10-20 yd range passes.
2019 LSU was a CYBORG TERMINATOR with brady and jugular joe burrow
they attacked every blade of grass...east and west...short, intermediate and deep north and south
and attacked mismatches all game. we used ADVANCED choice option routes for receivers like JJ. that destroyed defenses. they had to pick their poison.

this is the answer. we need more downfield passing. the short game is good.

Is excessive lathering permitted?

You don’t think it might be BK getting in a shell and not Sloan?

I need to see a stronger intermediate passing game. Its mostly quick screens or bombs. Those screens are basically extended handoffs. Put that together and you have a very Les Miles scheme last night. 2019 LSU made their money on the 10-20 yd range passes.
Difference here is 2019 OL vs this OL + 2019 Joe Burrow’s giddyup vs Nuss hips.
The plan was brilliant in context. I agree that they need to develop this, but you have to be able to trust your OL and QB to stretch vertical.
I think they knew what they had on defense & it worked out. No complaints, for now lol.
Also, Durham balled. Boy was the middle run game refreshing.

I was a little critical myself but almost every analyst I watched said he called a pretty good game

Yes, they showed some wrinkles in the second half to keep Clemson on their toes, but let’s not act like Sloan’s deficits as a play caller aren’t going to keep us stressed this year…
I haven’t seen any deficit as a playcaller. I think the people that do are the sage observers who know a bad call by the yards it gains. In other words, they are know nothing sky-is-falling Chicken Littles.

Some people just need something to bitch about.Hey morons it was the 1st game of the year against a talented D.Get a Fn grip and support this team and staff.

Was it all quick screens and bombs last year? No. Maybe he was calling plays that fit an overall strategy they devised for Clemson. And it worked. If two knuckleheads hadn’t made bad calls - the ref on the bomb and CBK on going for it with 15 seconds left - he would have put 27 points on Clemson and won by maybe 17.

Possibly, but this is the same head coach that can’t pass up going for it on 4th down in the red zone when he shouldn’t, or goes for 2 to win the Bama game rather than going to OT. He’s really aggressive sometimes and conservative others.
But we just don’t know if he’s in Sloan’s ear all of the time controlling the scheme or not.

This. The O was in position to score 27.
That is great on the road game 1.

He’s the perfect back for the OL we have. He can find a small crease, hit it quick, and get upfield fast. And if he gets to the second level and can kick in the speed, he’s always a big play threat. And he’s also good in pass protection and great catching out of the backfield.

Let’s step back to Les Miles tenure when a screen pass was a difficult play. LSU is light years ahead in the passing game. Run game is a work in progress… improving.

You’re missing the point. My only take was that he wasn’t fantastic. We win a game against a good team and you try to say that a bad play caller was fantastic. That was a terrible first half and shouldn’t happen with the talent on that offense. Sloan is calling a game so that he doesn’t make a mistake rather than letting his talent make plays. Let it rip. The players will only get better with mistakes
