I had to watch it with Clemson fans in Charleston to boot

Yup probably a top 5ish Les game I wish we could've won. UGH

All I can think of is Les had ptsd from not throwing the ball and settling for a missed field goal up 3 against Alabama earlier that season.
But it wasn’t a comparable situation. Against Alabama it was 2nd and 7 and 3rd and 10. It was 2nd and 2 against Clemson and he doesn’t run the ball. Les was an idiot.

Les Miles was simply a HORRIBLE coach.
Disagree.
He was a good (maybe even very good) coach. The inability to field a consistently competent passing game (not even some great one) kept him from being a great coach.

I think Clemson ran 82 offensive plays that game.

What? That's one of the few games he didn't do that.
Clemson couldn't stop Hill...so in his infinite offensive genius Les decided to not give him the ball. Hill had something like 94 yards and two TDs on 6 carries in the first half and first play of the 3rd. Mettenberger was terrible in that game, but Les kept passing.

While there are legit criticisms of Les, this drive shouldn't be one of them. Ive included the final LSU drive for those who don't remember how it played out.
Theres 2:43 left in the game when the offense lines up. Clemson has all 3 timeouts.
1st play: 2:43 left in the game, 1st and 10 on the LSU 39, 8 yard pass from Mett to Boone completed
2nd and 2: ball snapped at 1:58, Mett play action fakes to Hill, rolls out right, doesn't take time to set his feet and misses a wide open Landry, high. Had he thrown it anywhere that was catch-able and Landry falls right there, its a 5 yard gain; however, he would have had room to turn up field and pick up at least 10. It was a perfect play call that Mett didn't execute. Clock stops at 1:52.
3rd and 2: Mett drops back and the ball is batted down at the line. 1:47 left on the clock.
The first play worked out great. Complete for 8 yards, kept the clock running. The second play was perfect. Clemson expected the run, and would have led to a first down and Clemson using a timeout with 1:52 or less (depending on Landry gaining more yards). Then we could have run Hill 3 times to try and run out the clock and Clemson's time out. This one was on Mett, not Les.

Yeah and Jeremy Hill was awesome and having a great night. One of the biggest blunders of Miles' tenure.

Lea coaches himself right out of 2 wins that year. Bama- fakes a fg when it’s obvious “faking” distance. That stupid arse wildcat with Spencer ware on 4th down. They put 11 in the box and everyone knew ware would keep it. Fate was sealed when he bobbled the snap. Just give it to Hill.
That peach bowl was Les’s “hold my beer” after bama. Just end the game by pounding hill after the 1st down completion. Boyd hits a damn 4th and 17. I was so hammered I got caught by a dad eating his kid’s popcorn.

We famously let Mett attempt a couple passes on our last drive before they took the lead instead of running the ball to kill clock.

As we were leaving the stadium, I overheard two Clemson fans walking down the ramp next to me saying "we finally won a big one".
I was so livid. We didn't run hill at all in the 4th quarter. He had 12 carries for 124 yards, 10.3 average, and 2 TDs.
We got the ball twice in the 4th quarter.
We used 2:19 seconds and 1:08 seconds respectfully.
On our last drive, we had 2nd and 2 and third and 2 at our own 47 with two incomplete passes. Burned zero time, didn't force Clemson to use any timeouts, and punted. Clemson used all three timeouts on their last drive.
It was a masterclass in coaching.
9:26 Clemson scored a FG
7:07 We went 3 and out (Ware run, Mett pass, Mett sacked, punt)
2:47 Clemson scored a TD, missed the 2pt
1:39 We went 3 and out (Mett pass for 8, incomplete, incomplete, punt)
0:00 Clemson hit a walkoff FG in 1:08 seconds

Not giving Jeremy Hill the ball at least once on that last series may have been the Stupidest Decision in History.
Posted on 8/28/25 at 12:08 pm to TheBigHurt
Why did we not run Jeremy Hill more that game? That was so dumb. He was tearing up Clemson's Defense.

Les did that verse Clemson and Notre Dame where those were bowl games we should have won and blew.

Les was probably over correcting from the Alabama game. He ran it three times and missed the fg and then bama scored. He got crushed for not throwing it then so he was not going to let that happen again. But at 2nd and 2 you have a good chance to pick it up on two downs.

i live in SC amongst the clemps. i always give Les credit for their rise by giving them that game into the next level. they did knock nicky out 2x during their run, which i’m thankful. When they start popping off about Sat…..
‘look, this game is important, but mot as much as last time, win or lose, we’ll geaux thru the gantlet, yall go play your pansies and maybe we’ll meet up again when it really counts”
they fold…… they dont have a comeback

Agreed. The biggest mistake in that sequence against Bama was not going for it on 4th down.
I can't remember exactly, but I think it was 4th and 5? With the way Mett was slinging it that night, you 100% go for it there. In today's football driven by analytics, there wouldn't even be the thought of kicking. It was a 45-yard field goal attempt that would have only put you up 6 points. Made zero sense to kick, especially when you had an average kicker at best.
