18 is a forced tradition. 7 actually has become one.

This. Retire the jersey, not the number.

I'm pretty sure that you have to graduate to have your number retired. Didn't Shaq have to graduate before LSU retired his number?

I'm wondering if you have to graduate to get your name on the side of the stadium next to Cannon and Casinova or do you just have to be a certified bad arse.

The original 7. I don't think LSU had single digit numbers until the late 60's, and Bert was the first 7.

ope not. 7 holds some mystique and that is a good tradition to have.

so who has worn it? It has this huge mystique, I'm just curious who has worn that number?

If he wins the Heisman, it's very likely, but let's not anticipate...

The number wasn't passed down to him

He wears it in tribute of where he's from - the 7th ward

You have to graduate to be eligible for the LSU HOF. I don't know if there is a set of guidelines for having your number retired. Did Pontiff graduate? If I remember correctly, he was drafted as a junior and hadn't announced that he was returning before the unfortunate night.

it's still unnecessary to retire a number, even when you win the heisman and a championship

tim tebow set ridiculous college career numbers.. he won 2 national championships with florida and 2 sec championships, and broke so many records.. he was a heisman winner and a heisman finalist 2x's all while being a stand up guy to be respected..

and florida did not feel the need to retire the 15.. there's a QB on roster now with 15..

I just do not like the idea of taking a number away from the team just because some guy was one of the best.

There will be another great #7 at LSU, hopefully Moses soon!

I agree with that. At this point IMO it pretty much is retired in a way, it just comes out of retirement every year if there's a player special enough to wear it

i may be mistaken but I think in order to be eligible to have your number retired you have to meet all the qualifications for the hall of fame.

Noooooooooooo.....too many greats have worn #7 to retire it to LF7.

Did Bert Jones start the #7 tradition?

Bert Jones 70-72
Alan Risher 79-82
Steve Rehage 83-86
James Gillyard 92-95
Rondell Mealey 96-99
Trev Faulk 00-01
Adrian Mayes 02-03
Ali Highsmith 04-07
Patrick Peterson 08-10
Tyrann Mathieu 11
Leonard Fournette 14-

Probably the most productive jersey number in LSU football history.
