I can see that. What I saw though this year was a tired old man. The first two years he had some fire. As time went on he just seemed to be ready to collect his paycheck and put little effort into coaching and even recruiting. Only Brian Kelly fully knows, but I think we can figure his timeline out on caring and energy.

The best story from last night's podcast with Jordy Culotta and Jacques Doucet was Jordy talking about riding his bike past BK's house around 12-12:30 on gameday against Florida and BK was just getting into his car to head to the facility.

I don't get people who do that. I had to fire a long tenured employee not too long ago because he was just coasting after we promoted him. Never become complacent it will bite you in the arse.

I honestly don't think BK was checked out (besides playing too much golf). He really wanted to win a NC, but I think he lacks the talent to be a HC that can win the big games consistently to do that.

Some coaches just lack the ability to get there team up for big games. It was the same with mark richt at GA before Kirby. The signs were there outside the bama gsme year 1.

Got embarrassed vs FSU in year 2 in a primetime big spot top 10 game

Getting blown out vs bama in a playoff eliminator game in year 3

Losing to vandy
Getting blown out vs A&M in a playoff eliminator game

He simply was not the guy you wanted on your sideline in big time matchups

Kelly had no P4/5 coaching experience before coming to LSU

I mean, that's not entirely accurate.

The Power 4/5 has always added the "+Notre Dame" caveat.
and they play 9-10 power 4/5 schools every year.

Sounds like he should take a job coaching at a school that puts academics first and all the football players are walk-ons.

What? They made it to the Title game once in the BCS and the 4 team CFP once.
Was ND even remotely competitive in those games?

The fact that ND made it that far was, as you point out, in large part a result of its independence in scheduling. The point I'm making is that Kelly thought he could get over the hump at LSU but did not for the reasons I discussed (IMO).

I picked the last pre-covid year to see which schools they played after getting trounced 30-3 by Clemson to end the previous season:

Louisville (comfy win)
New Mexico (blowout win)
No.5 Georgia (close loss)
No. 24 Virginia (comfy win)
Bowling Green (blowout win)
No. 22 USC (close win)
No. 14 Michigan (blowout loss)
VT (one-point win)
Duke (blowout win)
No. 23 Navy (blowout win)
BC (blowout win)
Stanford (blowout win)

Not exactly a B10 or SEC schedule. Played enough ranked teams to give their record some legitimacy. Finished 10-2 and still wound up in the Camping World Bowl.

Regardless, BK coaching against those teams does not equate to being in a P4/5 conference where you can schedule only 2-3 OOC contests. And, as the poster above you pointed out, the recruiting part of it is what really differentiates coaching at ND and coaching in a power conference:
quote:

100% The kids that want to go to ND are not the same kids that want to go to LSU and they don't go to those schools for the same reasons. He did not know how to relate to the LSU/SEC kid or how to make their momma feel good about him as a coach. If you were going to act like BK, you better have the work ethic and respect that Saban draws. BK didn't have that.

I’ve gotta pick against the Rant a little bit on Kelly. I thought he did a good job year 1. It almost felt like he realized he was in over his head at the start of his second season and just started to coast and collect a paycheck until the inevitable day came. Also think he thought he had another year before he’d get let go, getting fired so abruptly after A&M must’ve surprised him

His biggest accomplishments were beating Nick Saban once, winning the West once, and a Heisman. Not the level of success we expect out of our program, but could’ve been worse honestly

Brian Kelly never respected the LSU job.

He never understood the assignment.

You can tell that Lane respects the LSU job immensely. And that is all the difference.

My theory is that once he beat Saban, he checked out.

It really does seem like that. He coached his arse off in that 2022 Bama game but then basically didn’t do shite after that.

Left the cupboard fairly stocked as well.

I think if Lane comes in and we make playoffs 2 of the first 3 seasons we'll forgive Kelly and he wont be remembered so sourly.

Could have been WAY worse. So grateful for our Governor and donors for sacking him so quickly.
