It’s meaningless. The crown jewel of the ‘23 class gone after 1 year because he didn’t win the starting job

College football is a joke. 75% of the 5 stars are gonna transfer if they don’t play in year 1

Honestly, lsu signed the perfect class this year. A bunch of guys with no ego because of a star that thinks they’re obligated to start.

That is one reason I dont really agree with Kelly trying to build from the HS ranks. Unless something changes, you just are never going to build from the freshman class again...and be competitive. You will lose unhappy starters, or impatient depth pieces every year.

You either get in the portal and be aggressive, or you settle for 3 or 4 loss seasons.

My guess is money.

The prices they are likely seeing in the portal are outrageous and LSU cannot compete financially with other schools

So Nick and Kirby are wrong too but you know better?

We've not lost 1 guy from last years class to the portal except Daughtery who left a month after he arrived and no current starter or presumed starter for next year at this moment

I really don't believe that when Kelly says he wants to "build from the HS ranks" it means to the exclusion of highly productive and talented transfer players. IMO it just means the 80-20 rule over the long haul. 80% from HS and 20% from the portal for players of need.

It was 50% HS and 50% portal in 2022.

In 2023 it was 65% HS and 35% portal.

This class so far is, 90.3% HS and 9.7% portal.

This is the first year since 2020 we’ve had enough of a roster to have a full 85 of legitimate P5-level players. You can’t snap your fingers and fix everything at once, which Colorado aptly demonstrated this year.

As for the strategy, we may not be where Bama and UGA are today, but that doesn’t make using the same model a mistake, especially when it’s heavily skewed toward LA talent that may be more likely to hang around a little longer than hired guns from out of state. It’s a proven formula that has worked here for many years.

I would expect that we will average 5-10 portal players per year from here on out. That’s what you see the most stable programs doing.

While true, NIL and the portal are changing that. Have to evolve with the times or get left behind.

I don’t particularly like it, but it’s now mass free agency every year. Take advantage of it or settle for second tier.
