Curious to get others take on whether a 3-3-5 defense is more effectively suited for the quality and depth of our front D.
DT - Guillory backed by Lee
DEs - Takes advantage of our depth here with Jones, Swinson, Shands, and Womack
Lbs - Whitt Weeks and Greg Penn III with West Weeks backing up
Rover - Perkins is freed up to be the versatile talent opal over the field.

Sure our new coaching staff will have the right answers. This is just my perhaps uninformed take.

I'd be hesitant to throw out 5 DBs when we have secondary concerns already.

3-4 seems to be the obvious answer to me

I have trouble believing we hired 2 d line coaches to play a 3-3-5

We'll be in 5 DB looks most of the season anyways because thats what modern spread offenses dictate. Most teams are putting 3-4 WRs on the field every play so you put 5 DBs on the field. Dont really want 7 box players when teams have 4 receivers out there.

IT's really a question of is your base defense a 4-2-5 or 3-3-5 these days.

I will say they treated Perkins more like a DB than LB last year so keep that in mind with 5 "DBs" on the field.

First, I don't think DT is going to be the huge weakness some think when the roster is filled out and some players moved. Second, on running plays you are talking only 6 in the box unless you bring a safety up. Third, on passing downs, you obviously have to walk a LBer up because LSU couldn't get a pass rush with 4, so obviously can't with 3. Then you are stuck with essentially 3 DEs and a NT which makes me worry about running lanes for a draw play or a designated delay QB run up the middle.

I just don't think that is the way to go.

They’ll sign a minimum of 2 DT’s in the spring portal window

A 3-3-5 can have 4 guys on LOS. A 3-3 stack is what you are thinking of. My guess is we are going to be a base odd front team but in modern college football you have to be multiple. There's a great clip of Kirby Smart explaining why you can't sit in the same front all game and be successful .

solution 3-3-5

LSU has been running a form of this defense on occasion for the last two years (DT/NT/DE - JACK/MIKE/WILL). But they went with the 3-4-4 to keep HP4 on the field at SAM.

I think you are going to be surprised how many different fronts we are going to use this year. There are going to be times where we have 3 down lineman with 3 backers. Sometimes have 2 down lineman with 2 stand up rushers and 2 inside backers. And sometimes 4 down lineman with 2 backers.

I think you will pleasantly surprised at how multiple we become with Baker as DC.

I doubt we play a conventional 4-3 this season or into the future. Just my two cents

3-3-5 which is really a 4-3 with a stand-up END who can drop into coverage. Bringing back the Bandit.

I'd be worried about Swinson and Womack in that formation.

If you go back and watch the ‘21 Bama game, that’s a good indication of what our defensive alignments will look like. Remember, it was well documented that CEO finally gave up full control of the defense and we looked completely different the rest of the year. Multiple fronts, aggressive blitzing, press coverage. Yes D Jones was the DC but looking at Mizzo’s film from the last two years, there’s no doubt that scheme was heavily influenced by Baker.
