For anyone with a D1 subscription here is the story on Kelly for Assistant of the Year; anything pertinent or interesting it’d be awesome if y’all could post!

quote:

"I think he's very complete in regards to what's required out of an elite Division I pitching coach," Johnson said, adding he trusts Kelly's ability to call pitches mid-game and find opposing hitter's weaknesses.

"I think he has a very good template to get the guys on the current roster to another level in terms of what he's going to do with building their arm strength and developing their pitch ability."

Kelly interviewed Saturday night, Johnson said, the day after Kelly and Arizona State reportedly parted ways. They reached an agreement Monday, Johnson said.

I believe he was the PC at Washington when they went to Omaha.

He developed an injury riddled staff at ASU pretty well this year.

But you also have to ask about why the injuries in the first place.

I'll just have to trust Johnson on this one. Not impressed with what I see on paper, but Johnson has more to go off of.

If he doesn't have a history of pitcher injuries under his watch in nearly a decade as a PC in the PAC-12, it would point to just bad luck.

From Sun Devils 247
quote:

Forced to utilize several pitchers who otherwise likely would not have made significant contributions, ASU was able to win 11 of its 15 weekend series and reached the postseason despite the rare circumstances on the mound. The Sun Devils finished the season with a 5.28 ERA.

“The job [Kelly] was able to do with our pitchers is unreal to me,” one player told Sun Devil Source on the condition of anonymity. “With what happened to our pitching staff, we should not have even had a .500 record in my opinion. It’s just a [testament] to [Kelly] and what he’s able to do. I think he’s one of the best pitching coaches in the nation.”

Kelly joined the ASU coaching staff prior to the 2020 season after seven seasons as associate head coach and pitching coach with the Huskies. His player development skills led several players to tell Sun Devil Source in the wake of Smith's dismissal that they would consider transferring if he did not remain on the ASU staff, most of whom said that Kelly’s departure could also have a similar effect on Sun Devils commits.

He was the recruiting coordinator at ASU as well. So he's worn multiple hats before, for those concerned about staff construction.

He didn't bring his pitching coach. He brought his rival's pitching coach.

I agree. And even bad luck exacerbated by the pandemic, which made injuries across the sport at all levels increase.

Yep. Hard to have a strong opinion on this one way or the other. Interesting that he was the recruiting coordinator.
