re: Kelly: ‘Van Buren is beginning to command the offense like a starter, not a backup’

If Nussmeier needs motivation at this point…he’s not our guy and needs to keep his slow arse in the locker room. He gets paid stupid money to bring his own motivation.
I agree. That said, there are rumors that Nussmeier doesn’t study nearly as much as Burrow and Daniels. By mentioning the backup, maybe he is speaking to Nussmeier through the media as if to say he needs to get it in gear if he wants to keep his job.

I think BK is trying to motivate the Nus Bus to get out of first gear.

With that being said, I think Nuss will play well this week because he knows he needs to.
He can’t. He hasn’t so far. He was good last year, not great, and he’s worse this year.
A lot on this board disagree but I maintain my stance that if Nuss throws 2 INT’s next game which is very possible, MVB will be playing and if he balls out, Nuss is done.

This is probably Kelly telling Nuss either put up or shut up

Absolutely no excuses for not giving him a shot against ole miss.
VanBuren might - might - have made OM think twice about using a three-man front and dropping 7 or 8 for most of the game, but one mobile QB wouldn't have turned the tide against the forces that actually doomed us for that game. They would have just dropped 7 instead and put a spy on MVB. Problem solved, and we would've still been in trouble for the rest of the game - and would then have to deal with a QB controversy brewing on the ride home.
My opinion.

He says shite like this to get everyone off his back. He does this all the time. Just play MVB and be done with it.

quote:I hear you, but aTm last year didn't have the same problems we're facing this year. I think most would agree that they should have made the switch at QB long before they played us. They really were just a mobile QB away from really good season - SO many of their games were closer than they would have been if they'd pulled that trigger sooner, and with a few more games of experience Reed might have made the difference in a couple of the games they lost down the stretch.
yeah because a similar scenario didn’t work out for A&M vs us last season
Conversely, we're NOT a mobile/DT QB away from being dominant. We could be dominant if our OC would gameplan to our strengths and away from the obvious weakness we have in our OL. We have speed to spare at WR but Nuss doesn't have the time to wait for a receiver to break open against 7 defenders in coverage - especially not when teams like SELA and Tech can get pressure on him with three or four DL.
The change we need is in game-planning and in-game adjustments - not at QB. Sloan needs to wake up and figure out how to use what he has right now to his best advantage - especially knowing exactly the defense he'll be facing for at least the next two games.
So not really a good comparison, IMO.

What would you do?

Sounds like Kelly is preparing to make the switch soon by saying that type of stuff out loud
Kelly is smart enough to know you never say something like this, much less given the situation we're currently in.
This was intentional, without question. The only thing we don't know is what's his intention with it.
Is it to prepare for the transition to MVB soon if needed?
Is it to just shut people up, making them think he's even considering playing anybody but Nuss?
Whatever it is, that comment didn't slip out or was just some throw away line.

What would you do?
...but if we can't keep pass rushers at bay to give Nuss a clean pocket, and we can't get pass blocking going for our only two RB's and Nuss won't be running or rolling away from pressure, then what does that leave?
My vote would be to start hitting the edges with speed; sweeps, quick screens, etc. Most of the pressure seems to come from between the tackles, not around the edges, and defenses are dropping 6, 7, or even 8 defenders to cover our speed burners at WR. So quickly hit the edges with something that doesn't require Nuss to sit and dodge very large humans every other play waiting for a WR to come open. Intentionally roll him away from pressure.
Again, I'm just a fan, but it seems logical that if your OL is having problems keeping the pocket from collapsing and can't get run blocking going between the tackles, then go where the defense is light - on the edges, or just behind the lines after our WR's have cleared out some defenders on fly routes.
And, it would help if Anderson got healthy and could start going on shallow routes across the middle between the pass rush and the dropping defenders.
Just my opinion.

I think it's clear that Nuss has another gear that he hasn't hit yet
Well it would be great if he would give 100% out there and find that “gear” soon

Nuss is hurt if you can't see it you're just dumb. Is it bad enough to play the backup qb? Who knows but nuss isn't going anywhere otherwise.

I hope this is a preface to Kelly pulling the trigger if it comes to that.
Kelly has managed this situation terribly. He’s been awful this year answering questions.

How do you know? We had NO scramble threat, and NO real pass threat. It truly couldnt get much worse. ONE series isnt ridiculous by any means.

Coach speak for: please don’t ask about the shite online and play calling this week.
Posted on 10/6/25 at 8:02 pm to UnluckyTiger
It’s for many purposes. Motivate MVB. Motivate Nuss. Make opposing coaches at least spend some time on prepping for MVB.
Builds a case for the narrative if and when Kelly does bench Nuss.
I honestly believe he is also fed up with Nuss playing scared. He’s not going to let his failures bring the whole ship down
