Saban put LSU on map! I’ll forever be grateful of that… the rest is irrelevant, chide small talk…

The amount of things that had to line perfectly for Saban to go to Bama for 17 yrs. Brutal.

-flirted with all these teams: Colts, Bears. Finally leaves for Dolphins.
-Drew Brees going to Saints
-Rich Rod wife not liking Tuscaloosa
-LSU hanging on to Les too long
-Texas had him in 2013

Agree. Wayne H. gave Saban everything to be coach of Dolphins. He loved LSU at the time but he just knew he was going to be great in the NFL. Hindsight I guess, just wish he would have not landed back at bama when he returned to college football.

When Saban left I think that the majority of us understood that move. It's when he decided to come back that effed me up.

I never liked when Bertman hired CLM from OK State. Saban basically said that CLM just kept what he had established going. I never felt that CLM put his own stamp on the program because his specialty was offense but our offenses never looked anything like what they ran at OK State.

Don’t forget Les Miles went to Michigan to get his dream job the day after his championship. I don’t know what happened there, but if they could have made it happen, Saban would have come back to Baton Rouge

Saban was going to give the pros a shot regardless of what Skip would have done. And he would have stayed in the pros had the Dolphins signed Drew Brees.

Yeah, eventually he would have went to the NFL at some point. Just the year prior he nearly went to Chicago for the Bears job.

I recently went on a college tour of Alabama and I lament what they were able to do with their campus with all the money brought in by the football program under Saban. Had Saban stayed at LSU, LSU would have benefited in the same fashion.

I recall hearing something along the lines of when Saban told skip he was just going to talk to Huizinga (sp) skip told if he got on that plane to talk - there was no way he was getting off

And that skip obviously wanted to keep him, and tried - but also was of a mind that he didn’t want the program to be held hostage every year as Saban flirted with nfl. (Didn’t he almost take the bears job the year before?)

Hence in the next search skip was looking for someone with stability along with other normal attributes

But like others said - Saban was going there at some point - if not Miami - somewhere the next year or the next.

I don’t necessarily doubt this to be true; however, Saban clearly had an itch to scratch. If it wasn’t Miami, it would’ve been a different opportunity in the NFL.

This. Seemed like every offseason there were rumors an NFL team was interested in him. Was only a matter of time it felt back then

In a different world we fire Les after fumbling away 2006 and hire Saban back.
Would’ve caught major backlash but worth it.

Saban is not the first LSU coach to leave LSU for something better and he probably will not be the last. Paul Dietzel left for Army. Its what young successful coaches seem to do. Kiffin has moved into a more mature stage in life and the move from Ole Miss to LSU hopefully was his last move untill retirement if the SEC and LSU administrators don't do something to screw things up with Lane.
