The way the system works, yes. And quite frankly, MLB would actually expect this type of production from a 4th year, 22 year old college SR with his resume.

The average triple A salary is around $36,000. Every lower level of Minors drops about $5k per year per level.

ETA: just salary. Doesn’t include possible bonuses.

Jones isn’t making MLB regardless of if he gets coached by LSUs hitting coach next year or MiLB coaching. He certainly needs to go now & make the most signing bonus he can before moving on to other ventures.

So you are going to dismiss what he accomplished over 3 years because he had a mini-slump in this year’s NCAA tournament? Sorry, but MLB has plenty of players that are going to give you 25-40 HR’s and strike out 200 time and Jones will only get better after 1,000 or so MiLB at bats.

if you consider getting $50,000 vs $500,000 not losing leverage, then sure. He wouldnt lose any leverage.

That's not how the MLB draft works. With no leverage he can't negotiate anything.

Just adding context, there hasn't been a Sr drafted in the first round in the last 5 years.

Highest Sr signing in the last 5 years was a kid out of UNC that was drafted in the second round and signed for ~$2.3M

Josh Smith was ~$970k

This is a bizarre declaration.

Why?

Well that's stupid, you have to ask yourself what's more important to you legacy or a few dollars. I'm sure you get a decent NIL deal to come back. 500k isn't going to retire a 22 year old. The home run record would probably stand for a long time given the current climate

Why? To prove that he can hit .300+ with 20+ HR? He's already done that. Twice.

This board said that coming into this year. Then he hit 6 few HR than the year before while also having 50 more AB's... Or are you talking about the LSU HR title? Because if so, that would be an awful reason to come back

Lol, he’s been a big part of two national titles in 3 seasons. He leaves lsu with an already cemented legacy

I agree that he has not shown himself to be the kind of prospect to be a major league 1B. But his best chance to develop at this point is to play among tougher competition in the minors. Playing in the SEC is like playing at High A, with only a few teams being AA quality. The minors will expose him to much more repetition and “steel sharpens steel” moments to improve his bat (lowering his k rate), and improve his defense. His defense may have looked good for college ball. But 7 errors at 1B over only 68 games is unacceptable to make it to the bigs.

Nobody is saying that $500k is going to retire him. But when you are looking at the possibility of being paid a minor league salary for the next 3 years, $500k is a big fricking deal.

You have absolutely no clue how the mlb draft process works.

So what if he got 300k to come back, he isn't guaranteed 500k in the minors? To what get lost in the shuffle of every other college player that hit .300 and hit 20 hr. There's a lot of them hes not a unicorn

I assume you are arguing semantics. Of course he can attempt to negotiate a higher salary. But the team has exclusive negotiating rights. So his options then is to just accept it, or play independent ball and hope next years team is feeling more generous.

Jones will ge rd 2 through rd 4 get 600k-1mil and should and least make a mlb roster at some time. Can’t teach his power and mlb is in love with power at the moment
