In years where you win NCAA games, your guards make FTs. In years they don't, you lose. My point is, coaches (even the great ones) are hit and miss on recruiting mental toughness. You just can't identify it in college. All you can do is recruit the best talent you can, but that doesn't always mean they will be "winners" in the college game.

I'll agree that there are numerous other reasons why we lost this game, but that was a huge moment.
It's a game changer when a guard bricks FTs late in a game. I know you know this, but this is why teams on the comeback trail usually lose momentum when they screw up and foul a guard late in a game.
Knock down the uncontested free shot,shooter, and we win the game.
Almost triple doubles are awesome... When you put the icing on your team winning.

he didn't lose it alone, but he had a REALLY bad stretch at the end of that game (including the final shot)

He recruited and coached the players who did. Any player can be a good free throw shooter. All he needs is a little bit of coaching on how to mentally discipline himself and do it. No good coach has teams that suck at free throw shooting. It takes about an hour or less of coaching time and then many hours of individual practice by the player. If a coach isn't smart enough or motivated enough to spare that hour or motivate a player to put in that practice, he loses by one point in the first game of the tournament because his uncoached, undisciplined team shot 1 for 7 from the FT line in the final minutes. He hides from the ball. Period. I can't rember the last game (if there is one) where he was big in crunch time. This was UK 2.0. Seemingly the best player on the court for 33 minutes who then reduces himself to literally being just a "screener" for the final 7 minutes.

This is true for all players, but especially guards. A coach who has guards shooting under 70-75% from the FT line is either a terrible recruiter, a terrible motivator or flat-out doesn't give a shite. Jones seems to fit one or two of those.

Well Mickey is obviously dealing with some sort of physical issue not to excuse missing free throws but quarterman missed some too. Hornsby was almost non existent. They all share the blame

that is actually not true. some big men don't have the coordination, especially with their hands
FTs are on the individual, both in prep, growth, and execution.
