i don't watch LSU basketball (like i said earlier i watch real basketball), so i can only comment on this game

but that point seems to be more of a flawed roster, which is going to happen in CBB...ESPECIALLY at a school like LSU

we're not duke or kentucky. we're going to have flawed rosters. every recruiting miss hurts. every transfer out hurts. we're not going to be able to keep many good CBB players for long enough to work out those kinks b/c they'll go to the NBA.

the loss tonight sucked, but LSU is going to have a ceiling without some insane luck (like our final 4 team and how all those guys came around at the same time, were from the BR area, and all took major jumps in a year or 2)

1) LSU playing terrible defense down the stretch (really much of the second half). NC State put up wide open 3 after wide open 3; they just missed them. They really got whatever shots they wanted down the stretch. This is an ongoing issue with LSU's teams since he has been here.

I can't argue that we don't emphasize D. We want to run, but we do not employ (or the players don't get) the concepts of transition D.

i think our shocking defense in the first half, built largely on lucky bounces and hands (leading to steals), was the outlier tonight

You need a bigger sample. Yes, this group as a whole has not shown a lot of mental toughness, but maybe it is just the kids. We are headed in the right direction, and I have a suspicion, guys like Blakeney and Simmons won't be "soft" in that regard. I also think guys like Tim Q and Patterson will become tougher next year.

State - missed FTs by Mickey
AU (1st meeting) - the absolute worst defense and execution on inbounding the ball
Mizzou - Missed FTs by Mickey
Tenn. - Missed shots by nearly everyone except Hornsby
Tex, AM (both meetings) - missed FTs and shots down the stretch to give the game away.
Texas Tech - a win, but nearly blew this game until late

If we are the same way after another couple recruiting classes, I'll definitely blame the coach, but we are pretty early in this experiment with JJ, and the team has improved overall every year.

T shooting is ALWAYS on the player. There's no special coaching involved or necessary. It's all about desire and the willingness to take countless FTs on your own. You have to WANT to be a good FT shooter. Regardless of the opponent, the defense, etc., the look from the FT lines is always the same

LSU fans love to blame coaches but it's pretty obvious how much this was lost by the players on the floor

Probably one of the biggest choke jobs I've seen in a long long time. Let's not let TQ off the hook either. I don't know why anyone is surprised. Sure it would have been nice to get the win, but, this is who LSU is......one of the most non-fundamental, low iq basketball teams you would ever be around...and then throw in the choke factor...and bam.

I mean a bigger sample than one season. If you're gonna blame the coach for lack of mental toughness, you have to see if it is these kids, or if the next classes have the same issues.

ETA: I don't think anyone would debate that this particular team didn't display a lot of toughness.

Wildly inconsistent play all year with times the team just didn't show up. It's coaching and players.

There wasn't any transferring out from last year, but when it comes to recruiting for a bench, we missed badly the last 2 years. There are 2 post players right now that have not only not logged minutes for this game, but did not log minutes for most of the season.

You really want to invoke bad memories of last season too?

trends?

This is a guy with decades of coaching experience, and as Barkley said, a top 10 talented team that SHOULD NOT lose to teams like Auburn, TWICE and that shouldn't blow double digit leads late due to lack of execution/fundamentals.

Johnny has recruited pretty well for his first team. We just haven't been the type of program that can get good second line kids yet, so we've taken projects.

You mean like the trend of choking away leads at the end of games with poor execution and huge scoring draughts like the Kentucky game, the SEC tourney gamre and tonight's game? Trends like that?

Last years team wasn't soft, that 2012 sure as hell wasn't soft. It's just been this year. This year we don't have a guy who's willing to just say frick it, give me the ball, I'm taking over. Last year we had JOB. It was frustrating at times, because he didn't need to do it sometimes, but he demanded the rock. This year, they all seem to run from the ball.
