But he’s not a great OC, at least not yet.

I understand making him OC because of his other strengths, but that comes at a cost.

Kelly needs to take more control of the play calling on offense.

Sloan might become an elite play caller, but he isn’t one at this point in his career.

Kelly is a much better play caller than Sloan is right now.

If you think the idea isn’t a good one because part of Kelly’s focus on gamedays will shift elsewhere, or because you want Sloan to keep gaining experience, those are fair arguments.

But, if you think it’s because Kelly is a worse play caller than Sloan is, you would be wrong about that.

It wasn’t good for the first 3 drives vs Ole Miss, or early vs South Carolina

My suspicion is that Brian Kelly stepped in and called plays, as he should have

The two TD plays at the end of the game were about as perfect as it gets. Drawing guys off to open the middle for Anderson. Putting Lacy in motion to get the matchup on OM’s weakest corner. Yeah, he totally sucks.

The On3 guys mentioned today that the Jackson 4th down run was a busted play and wasn’t what was called. Jackson wasn’t supposed to take the ball. It was supposed to either a shovel or short pass to Thomas set up by the fake. Jackson blew it and took the ball at the mesh. This is one I know a lot of people blamed on Sloan and Kelly.

That’s where the scripted plays end and where the staff starts adjusting to what the defense is doing. That’s pretty typical.

Vs Ole Miss, we didn’t have Daniels so some guys were shuffled. OM’s defense was sitting on everything outside, which is where we run a lot of our plays. Once they adjusted, we started moving the ball.

I’m not shitting on Sloan, he just doesn’t have the experience in offensive play calling that BK has.

I get why he’s the OC, and it’s not because he has tons of play calling experience. It’s because he recruits and develops elite QBs.

And that’s a great guy to have on staff.

Play calling, especially on short yardage and in the red zone have been bad all season.

Except the play action TD to Green. We need more of that.

I think play calling is one of those things, you can learn, sure but you either have it in you to be elite or you don't. He can be good, maybe great, but i don't think he'll ever be elite. Good thing great will work just fine for us.

There have definitely been some
moments where he’s called some terrible plays, but our offense isn’t bad.

we seem to forget about him when plays work.

our biggest problem os that we can’t find a way to run.

don’t get me wrong, that 4th down last weekend was maybe the worst play call and play design i’ve ever seen. I may have to watch it again, honestly no way it was property executed either.

but frick was it a bad play.

There have been some moments where he’s had brilliant calls as well, though.

I don’t remember which game it was, but we had something like 4th & 6 and he called a draw that caught everyone by surprise. We saw a similar deal on the 4th down TD against Ole Miss.. nobody expects a shot at the end zone in that situation.

I think the reality is that people judge “play calling” based on results. If a play works it was a great call. If it doesn’t, it was terrible. But there’s a lot of shite that goes into results on offense.. the call, sure, but also the overall scheme/design and execution.

Our offense would be unstoppable right now if we had a consistently effective rushing attack IMHO. But is our lack of rushing success due to situational play calling? I don’t think so. It’s been mostly a ton of little execution mistakes, either by the OL/TEs or the RBs, that have kept 3 yard gains from turning into 6-8 yard gains. You can certainly argue that’s still on Sloan as OC, but it’s not necessarily because of an issue with in-game calls.

One last thing to point out is that this is the first year with helmet communications, allowing coordinators to give checks directly to the QB/LB at the line of scrimmage after seeing the other team’s alignment. Every coordinator is learning this aspect of the game on the fly right now because it didn’t exist in CFB last year.

The 4th down outside run or whatever it was to Kaleb Jackson was the worst playcall I’ve ever witnessed
