One of the reasons why Paul going to USCe is so weird.

He was retired, chilling, building a home to relax in with his wife. Been here for like 2 decades. Was in the coaches "club" and had a nice reception from fans at this point. To go to SC.....just odd.

This. You can have elite troops but if they are poorly led?

JJ is the best coach we have on campus. Period

No doubt he is an excellent coach. Until he wins as much as Mulkey has won he is not the best coach on campus. She is the best coach on campus. because she has one as recent as he has and still has a team performing at a very high level, despite having a medical issue last year and a little bit of recruiting problems. Just wait until she brings in this next class..

How so?

I know there's the pitch clock, NIL and there's some analytics that are used now. The way Skip used his pitchers is frowned upon now. The SEC has expanded 2X since Skip.

Others?

ETA: the bats have undergone changes. Not sure how now compares to then.

The game itself doesn’t change, but college baseball has absolutely changed. In Skips day it was guys who couldn’t get drafted or were who were overlooked for whatever reason.
maybe so.
If you want to have fun, try to find any LSU roster in the last 34 years which compares to the number of major league pitchers that exceeds the1989 roster.

So you downvote when you can’t come up with a response?

Huh? We have 12 that are over 6'3". Also, Paul's regime recuited tons of bigger guys. Ya'll just get stuck remembering some of the guys who played in a 3 year stretch. His staff recruited travinski, jared jones, matt clark, crews, beloso, koeneman, and deichmann among others

Ask the players. They ask. There were pictures of him and players talking baseball.

The game hasn’t changed that much. 90’, 60’ 6” - still the same. Umpires? Still the same.
To steal a line from Bull Durham “This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.”

PM can't get over the fact that jay turned things around and won a natty in year 2 from taking over

the pitching was in shambles when Paul left

Regarding your first point, I'd like to know how much a factor that was in PM's decision to return to coaching, i.e., watching his successor win a natty. IMO, it played a part.

Regarding your second point, PM left about five SEC caliber arms (Fontenot, Coleman, Hilliard, Floyd, Edwards) - lean. Floyd and Edwards developed after PM's retirement. Coleman looked good at the end of '21 but never regained his form after his injury.

But to PM's credit, he left CJJ a really talented set of position players (Tre, Gavin, Jordan, Cade Doughty, Beloso, the GOAT, Milazzo, Travinski).

It’d be a great podcast. Not publicized no communication just a mic at their lunch. I’d listen. JJ fires me up with his passion. Skip has a great since of humor and is motivational in his normal conversations. Always about being better

When you listen to Skip it’s not always about the X’s and O’s of said sport but it’s a life perspective that he teaches with that truly motivates people in lots of ways and especially young men.
Jay is listening and taking it all in. Happy to hear his pride isn’t too big to realize what an idol Skip is to the sport. We definitely are on the right track with Jay.
Dude eats and breathes LSU, also its traditions and culture.
We are lucky we found him.

The homerun numbers would be even more outlandish then they used to be if the bats were the still the same. The technology has gotten better but the bats are purposely deadened. BESR to BBCOR was most recent change. And it is because hitters hit harder and pitchers throw harder now. Just like every other sport, the new age athlete has way more resources to help develop skills. If you gave Bear Jones one of those old school Easton bats, he would possibly put a hole in the scoreboard.

there's some guys on YouTube that do all sorts of baseball bat reviews.
they did a video on current bats vs the '97 Easton Reflex.

They averaged something like 7 or 8 mph higher exit velocities with the Reflex than they did with current bats.

so yeah guys like Jared Jones would do some serious damage with those old bats.

This is the most absolute dumbest thing anyone could ever say about any of Skip's LSU Baseball teams. You are absolutely in your low to mid 20's arent you?

In the 90’s the best players out of high school were not going to college. Most still aren’t but a lot more of the best prospects are choosing college over the pros right out high school these days. Especially SEC schools.

The talent at the college level is absolutely higher than it was in the 90’s.

Baseball is still baseball. Age means nothing. Jay may know the training aspect, but I bet Skip can still teach him a thing or two about the game within the game
