this
he really is a miserable person

It's always interesting to contrast the criticism of Hawthorne with the defense of Hawthorne:
Criticism: He's constantly negative.
Defense: But he's a fan.
Criticism: He does not understand fundamental rules of the game.
Defense: But he's a legend.
Criticism: He emotional to a fault.
Defense: But you couldn't do it any better.
Criticism: He says inappropriate things about LSU players (e.g., "he's useless").
Defense: I bet you'd sound like a dead manatee in the booth.
Criticism: He often makes egregious mistakes in calling the action on the field/court.
Defense: Oh, and you wouldn't make any mistakes, right?
Criticism: He's not a good play-by-play man (which is his job). That is, he does not do a good job of describing what actually is happening on the field/court.
Defense: But he was tired and had a long bus trip ahead of him.
Criticism: "Jack Hunt!"
Defense: Um ...
See a pattern? No one defends Hawthorne based on his competence, professionalism, or accuracy.
The point of this is that Hawthorne defenders seem to think that professional competence and fan-like enthusiasm are mutually exclusive. And the "but could you do any better" is a red herring -- no one on this board is suggesting that they be hired to be the Voice of the Tigers.
But there are professional, competent people out there who sure as hell could do a better job than Hawthorne. The man is paid (well, I would imagine) to do a job, a job he just isn't very good at anymore.
Personally, I don't listen to the radio calls anymore because it is not worth it.
He needs to retire, or be steered in that direction if necessary.

I only read the first page of this thread, but I was listening to the game last night, and I agree with most of the points from that page.
I have defended Hawthorne many times on here. He is passionate, and he wants the Tigers to win. The last couple of years he has seemed very negative (as in every 1st down the LSU defense gives up is sure to cost us the game. LSU may be winning by 10, but we can't stop the other team and they are sure to come back and win). Last nights baseball game he was obviously not in the right frame of mind to call that game. Every time LSU squandered a scoring threat, you would have thought that Jim Hawthorne just lost his will to live. He was very critical of Mahtook trying to steal 2nd in the bottom of the 9th inning, because in his mind that was a dumb time to steal. He couldn't believe that the players couldn't get a hit to win the game, as if this one game meant life or death. He definitely needs a night or two off to regroup.

He has gotten a little more negative, but he has always emotionally reflected the game. I like his rough edges a little bit. In the last 3 innings of the game, he was basically saying what everyone was thinking...right or wrong.
He is a good announcer and loves LSU. I feel a little sorry for him, because it's his love for LSU that gets him in trouble some times. If I were calling LSU games, it would be my downfall too.
In this thread, the main thing I have an argument with is the fact that people are complaining about his negativity, then turn around and complain about his excitement over a long fly ball. He can't win. People, right or wrong, have developed their opinions and are looking for his faults. His voice is synonomous with LSU athletics and anyone else would seem foreign to me.
That's why when LSU wins any game, in any sport, in the final seconds or inning, I can't wait to get to the computer and listen to Hawthorne's call. I, for one, hope he is here for a long time.

I know he's OUR crazy uncle announcer but I think something is going on. Dementia, early alzhiemers, addiction. He just not right lately and he didn't have far to go to reach problematic.
SOLUTION: give him one game a week or half-games only.

When it comes to baseball Jim doesn't give a shite about the outcome, that is where you're wrong. The only outcome he is concerned with is the game being over as quickly as possible.

i can lean either way, but, last night and each passing game, things just keep mounting.. did you hear the disgust, pain, frustration, and almost a disdain, in his voice? don't get me wrong, i had the same feelings, but, didn't need him to compound them. might be time to give him the 2 gun salute...

I have no problem with Hawthorne being a homer and wearing his heart on his sleeve.
I DO have a big problem with his "grumpy old man" and "know-it-all" persona these last few years where he is constantly interrupting, talking over and belittling his color men like they don't know shite. He won't let something go and move on.
It's distracting and embarrassing.
For that reason, it's time for Jim Hawthorne to hang them up; voluntarily or involuntarily.
My dream? That Jim Henderson could somehow do double duty with the Saints and LSU.

It may have something to do with one of his close family members being ill. There's all kind of reasons a person can grow negative that you would have no idea about. Who knows?

I think Hanagriff does a better job at calling the action. I wish he'd get the 6 innings and let JH do the middle 3.

Agree, he sounded suicidal on more than a few occasions last night. And just because the USM last pitcher hasn't pitched before, LSU was automatically supposed to hit his every delivery... On the strike out to make 2 outs in the 12th, JH folded his tent up and quit speaking. Then Wet swung and missed the first pitch of his AB and JH says OH MY GOD... WTF is that. Like LSU hitters cannot hit with 1 strike?!! OR score with 2 outs and runner on third?!?! he sounded SOOO suprised that they won that game in that situation because they had "SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES EARLIER TO WIN" STFU JH and just call the game...
Almost forgot all the GDamn FLY BALL DEEP..caught. and HE POPS IT UP....out of play foul... What shite is that?

if you ever watch a game on tv and listen to hawthorne on the radio you realize he makes way more mistakes that you might not notice if you are just listening on the radio.
he really cant go two batters without messing something up.
