I think we're going to recruit just fine without him. I'm more interested in who the new pitching coach is going to be.

He didn’t. Jake Gautreau is going to get the job, this is Jay giving JBob a chance to look good for his fan base.

Is Jake not going to get some good head coach looks? I'd love him, but his status seems to rising above assistant.

He wants to hire the best so he offered him. He declined now you move down your list. Do you only offer the people you think will accept ?

You can have preliminary conversations with him to gauge his interest. Asst coach hires are a little different than HC hires. Usually the asst are the ones reaching out.

I don't think it's a black eye for JJ or the program just a little surprising.

Assistants are a lot different and he's under a more established head coach with a lifetime contract who he is very close with.

This was a long shot from the beginning.
Assistants ARE a lot different. They're much more likely to move, not less. Finding new assistants happens way more often than finding a new HC. My post is alluding to the posters who think we didn't offer another HC who turned us down.

Samesies.

That is the more critical hire.

There are a lot of good recruiters with regional familiarity out there, Jay can recruit and coach hitting well himself so this guy isn't make or break.

There aren't a lot of elite pitching coaches.

Tech folks were pretty confident he wasn't going anywhere. I wonder what gave JJ the confidence to make him his first choice.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with talking to the guy and seeing if you can work something out. Ever heard the term “go to ____ and make him tell you no”

Jay took a shot, so what we couldn’t pull a guy away from a spot where he was very happy. Just go on to the next guy on the list.

More than likely Tech came through at the end with some tremendous offer to keep him there. No way this goes public unless there was some indication he was interested in the job and inclined to take it until something changed.

What pirate dickweed doesn't get is unlike our precious coach and our football coach, Jay Johnson isn't going to dependant on his assistants to succeed.

Exactly. Johnson is just trying build the best staff possible. This particular spot won’t make or break him though.
