It still doesn't make sense that Cooper faced more hitters than Ack.

Yes it does, if you believe as I do that he wanted Guidry to finish the game.

But we all saw Guidry didn’t have it and it forced him to make a move to Cooper.

There is no defending how the 8th was handled, Hurd pitching the best 5 outs of his life bailed us out.

Imagine sitting at home and watching a game and actually thinking this lol

The one who has the most information can make the best decisions. Between the coaches and the fans, I trust the coaches.

Then he pinch runs in the bottom of the inning, replacing a catcher with a catcher, and the bunt that followed saw the runner get thrown out on a play where someone like Stevenson might have been safe. After all of that, the Tigers prevailed, and that's what counts. I have a lot of questions for what coach was doing in the 8th.

Who did we have left on the bench? You only get 27 players.
Maybe he wanted to save his last or last two pinch hitters???

I often have to remind myself that I’ve never coached a team to the CWS or anywhere. Coach JJ knows what he’s doing.

What was the situation with ready arms, innings and how does that fit in today?

Thanks.

They were all available, because they all pitched, or were warming at some point. What does today have to do with yesterday? Are you saying Jay was tanking his bullpen usage last night to save them for today? Is that a good strategy when you are holding a two run LEAD?

Thanks.

Who do we have left? Pearson, Stevenson, Paul, Merrifield and Nippolt, at that point were left. Nippolt later came in to play second. He could have easily pinch ran with Stevenson or Paul, as neither of those guys have been used as legitimate pinch hitting options, and still had Pearson and Merrifield, and third player available. There is no logical reason why Milazzo should have been the pinch runner there. None that don't require some weird abstract explanation, that I see.

Why does Guidry need to get 5 outs, when Ackenhausen is a proven arm, with more experience than him? And if he has that much confidence in Guidry, why did he give up on hm after two batters? To go to Cooper? The guy with an ERA over 6.5?

"They know better than us". Ah, I see. Well that explains it all. I hope no one here questions the lawmakers, and media. They have all the info, after all, and they are paid to know things.

It's funny how inconsistently people apply their own advice to trust people because they are supposedly experts. I also wonder if these same people were defending Paul Mainieri two years ago.

Possibly... I know this is a very long shot, but possibly Jay knows stuff about his pitchers, arms, and their issues far far better than yourself.

I know thats almost impossible, but at least ponder it.

Not going to plan = not done intentionally.

You are presuming he didn’t have contingencies in place stating it that way. It’s clear his plan was to use Ackenhausen and Cooper as situational pitchers against lefties with Guidry as Plan A and Hurd as Plan B to close out the game (and likely Collins as Plan C). This wasn’t a case of him trusting only Ack and Guidry to get it done then having to throw up a prayer when that didn’t work.

I get that you didn’t trust Hurd in that situation. My first reaction to how it played out was the same as yours. The criticism now presumes Johnson had no reason to trust Hurd. It also presumes Ackenhausen could have been stretched out further as the Plan B in the case Guidry didn’t have it, which he didn’t. I think it also puts more faith in Guidry than is warranted. He looked good against Ole Miss, but didn’t have it against Kentucky or last night. Those are his last 3 outings with 2 of them being poor.

I’m hindsight, Jay probably wouldn’t do it the same. Even though we won.

You only go to plan B if plan A didn't work out?
So if plan A didn't go as intended then we have a contingency .

I’m not sure if you are agreeing with me or if you think this post is contrary to mine.

Possibly… And this is a long shot too, but maybe coaches sometimes make bad decisions. Even the great ones. This idea that no decision can be questioned, just because we aren’t there everyday is incredible.
