Jay gave us some homework in his postgame interview. He said go look at the lines for Kade Anderson's 2nd and 3rd start of last year and compare it to Evans'.

Kade:
5.1 IP, 3 Hits allowed, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K
5.1 IP, 3 Hits allowed, 2 ER, 3 BB, 10 K

Casan
5.0 IP, 3 Hits allowed, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
5.1 IP, 2 Hits allowed, 2 ER, 3 BB, 10 K

So maybe Jay knows what he's talking about?

If you don’t think CJJ is paying attention to 1000x the variables as everyone on here combined then you are clinically retarded (not directing this at you, OP). The dude has literally said he gets certain freshmen playing time to set them up for the following season. Most people here can’t see past their nose and he’s fortune telling at a relatively consistent rate

Evans is inproving.

Moore has looked solid

Schmidt is improving and has looked really good last 2 starts.

I like where we are at pitching wise.

Just for shits and giggles I looked up Skenes, thinking his game 2 and 3 starts would be in line with these two guys....... nahhh

6.0 IP, 2 Hits allowed, 1 ER, 2 BB, 11 K
6.0 IP, 1 Hit allowed, 0 ER, 0 BB, 13 K

He ended up being pretty solid for us.

lol he’s lead us to 2 WS titles in 3 years so yeah id says he does.

The jackasses on here complaining are comical. You would think we hadn’t won jack shite since he got here.

The program is in the best spot it’s been since the 90s under Skip. We good baws. Enjoy the ride.

Just need a few more pieces to come together. Sheerin and Guidry are automatic right now out of the pen, with Rizy not far behind.

Guys like Williams, Plog, Dathe, Noot, and Cowan I think will be the next tier to take a step forward.

If we can get one or two of Paz, Ricken, Garcia, Lachemeyer, and Fontenot to gain some consistency, then we are set.

Plenty of time to figure it out but these last two weekends were a major step forward.

Competition wise...

Omaha/Kansas State vs Indiana/Dartmouth will likely be a wash when we revisit this after the regular season.

The only concern I have regarding Evans is when it rains it seems to pour on him. The only way to stop that in the future is to let him learn how to work through it. No offense to the teams LSU just played, but they're exactly who he needed to face to get some of this worked out.

Anyone else notice how nice is windup is now?

Yes, seems like one "bad" inning per game that sort of overshadow the rest of his performance.

I actually think Jay is doing a good job of letting him pitch through it. Thought he came back nicely after that weird inning against Indiana and settled in.

Yes, that is the first thing I noticed on Friday. A lot more relaxed and not as jerky.

I agree with, which also tells us that the 56 game playoff thing is kind of a farce if he is setting things up for down the road. He is obviously trying to win every game but not in the 56 game playoff model

We know Casan is a dog. We saw it last year, and he loves the big moment. I will not be surprised if his numbers actually improve once we start facing better competition. This weekend rotation has some serious potential.

it’s nuts but we went through the CWS last year with 5 guys throwing 43/45 innings.

Anderson, Eyanson, Shores, Evans and Cowan.

we got a combined 2.0 from Noor, Williams and Mayers. Insane.

in 23 we threw 13, but only 7 threw over 2 innings. a few were just cannon fodder in that game 2 of the finals we just needed to get through

Sorry I trust random ranter over JJ. I mean he made his own thread and spewed some unoriginal drivel. That took thought and effort.

He has, he’s been fantastic. But I don’t think it’s unreasonable to still want to see him do this against SEC lineups. His pinpoint control of so many pitches is great, but velocity matters. It allows you to get away with mistakes. Even on off speed pitches. Guys that throw 98 can hang a dick high slider and get away with it because hitters have to be geared up for the fastball.

And Moore’s, much like Cowen’s, change up is by far his best pitch and he lives on being able to throw that wherever he wants in whatever count he wants. But he has to be able to locate his fastball in and out too. If goes out there one day and doesn’t have command of just 1 of those and they can sit on the other, SEC lineups are going to touch him up. And how effective will he be the 2nd or 3rd time through lineups?

I think he’s be suited to start than Cowen because he does have other pitches that he commands, but I also think his lack of velocity gives him little room for error and he’s susceptible to having a mini “slump” like Cowan did towards the end of last season. Especially with the notoriously small strike zones of SEC umpires.

Maybe not, maybe he’s just that good and is dialed in every time he takes the mound. But I’m afraid when he’s not, he will get touched up and touched up early. And it’s not ideal if you have to go to the pen in the 2nd inning of Game 2 of a 3 game series. We may be the best version of ourselves if Schmidt can keep improving, gain some confidence and swag, and establish himself as the #2 and slide Moore back to the Game 3 starter.

Or Moore may continue to deal all year long a never relinquish that 2 spot. I have no idea and am making no predictions at all—especially doom and gloom ones—it’s just one thing I’ll be keeping my eye on as the season progresses.

(Another is this team’s lack of power, but that’s really for another thread. But the less 3-run bombs you hit, the more “that’s just baseball” games you wind up playing. Which could wind up putting a lot of pressure on the entire pitching staff. It’s super early and not panicking at all 12 games in, but we played 4 games this week at home in unseasonably warm weather and got 8, 5, 5, and 4 hits respectively against subpar pitching. If we’re going to have stretches like that with that few hits, a lot more of the ones we do get are going to have to leave the yard.)
