i almost get the "ben voogd" syndrome when smart has the ball. he's not a good dribbler and he certainly doesn't dish the ball very well. i get really nervous when he has the ball.

I can confidently say we’d be 0-6 in the SEC without him.

I mean in SEC play he has 23 assists to 11 turnovers.

This is also really odd coming off a 7 assist game

If he didn't turn it over so much, LSU would win games by a comfortable margin...

last night he was better, but still had a couple of tipped passes that were turn overs.

UF shot great from 3s, we shot terrible again.

our inside game is top shelf

I hear you man his handle isn’t tight like Waters and he seems out of control but we have to be fact and results oriented. The stats say he’s safer with the ball than Waters was. Now granted Tremont had the ball in his hands more but let’s compare anyway.

Career stats
Waters - 3.2 turnovers per game
Smart - 2.2 turnovers per game

In their second seasons
Waters - 3.5 turnovers per game 2018-19
Smart - 2.7 turnovers per game 2019-20

So the fear is more optics than results based. Smart nearly averages a full turnover per game fewer than Waters did and their assists aren’t that far off either. Waters 5.8, Smart 4.7.

5th in the league in assists per game
2.7 turnovers per game and he is playing 34 minutes a game. thats not bad at all for a primary ball handler

The problem in my opinion is that his turnovers all seem to come at big moments in the game so they seem amplified. Could just be perception though.

it may be this. but, i can't help but feel very insecure when it's in his hands.

I know everyone loves him but nobody makes me more nervous than Skylar Mays. Having him dribble up the court is like using a disabled player.

You telling me a pg averaging 13.5 and 3.8 in conference play makes you nervous?

We have one good season and now we are spoiled lol.

Smart had 7 assists to 3 turnovers last night and dropped 13 points on 9 shots.

That's about as good a night as you'll get out of him.

Are you re-watching early season games? Because I'd get it then, but he's improved massively since OOC play. He has 23 assists to 13 turnovers in conference play. That's about 2 turnovers a game, i'll take that all day from my PG.

Mays has 25 assists to 18 turnovers in conference play which is a worse ratio, does he make you nervous too?

It’s his long limbs that make it look a little awkward. He’s all arms and legs at 6-4 and isn’t built like a traditional college point guard. He does need to continue and improve on it but as long as he doesn’t overdribble he’s usually fine.

At what point did he start making you nervous? I feel like he's taking care of the ball much better this year then last.

It's his style of play. He looks like he is out of control at times but clearly his stats say otherwise.
