Ja'marr Chase and Terrace Marshall both made the right choice this past season

At the level Chase and Marshall play football at, football is a career choice for them, not a college hobby. They can make as much with their signing bonus as an LSU engineering graduate might make in a lifetime. An injury can greatly reduce that earning capacity. I can not fault a kid for treating a play or opt out of playing decision as a business decision.

Chase opted out of playing last year. He is possibly a top five, certainly a top ten, pick come Thursday night. It would have been almost impossible to improve on his draft position playing another year. Even if you remove the risk of injury from the equation, Chase was unlikely to put up the same numbers with Burrow and Brady gone. Chase could be looking at a 15 million dollar signing bonus or more. Can anyone really second guess his decision?

Marshall decided to play this past season. He would not likely have been a first round pick based on the national championship season. He had injuries and was sharing catches with Jefferson and Chase.

Marshall has played himself into being a first round or early second round pick and very likely made an extra few million by playing this past season. Yes he was risking injury, but the potential reward was worth it. He had to show he could stay healthy and be the number 1 receiver on a team. Marshall improved his stock considerably by staying.

I do not think either player loved LSU or his teammates any more or less than the other. Marshall was no more of a "team" player than Chase was. He made a business decision/gamble to up his stock in the draft and it paid off.

Thursday will hopefully be a great day for both players. They represented LSU well when they played and having two receivers drafted so high will help LSU recruit other receivers. With Beckham, Landry, Jefferson and others in the NFL, LSU is in the discussion for wru too.

Good luck to these guys. I think they both chose wisely. I don't think of Chase any less for opting out. Its a good example of how players can make different decisions and both be right.

I think Chase did but Terrace Marshall could have worked his way up more if he kept playing.

Still wish them boat the best.

I cheer For all former tigers so long as they stay out of trouble off the field.

He has first round talent, doesn't mean he goes in the first however.

You could say that about many prospects.

NFL knows talent when they see it

He’s getting mocked at like 28 and sometimes
In the second round.

I think He could have been a sure fire no second thought first rounder, but you’re right he might still go in the first.

I'm not saying you are wrong for the individual, but you don't find something inherently unbecoming to see the best guys QUIT on their teammates simply because they have a better opportunity to play at the next level? I don't think I could join a team. Work and compete with my teammates and friends. Only to then say BEFORE the season "frick it! I'm too good for you guys. Handle it your self"

Sure there is a risk of injury, poor play that could lower a guy's draft stock. But that existed before 2020 and none of the top talent "opted out". Guys still got drafted and had successful NFL careers.

The “NFL knows best” arguement ignores how terrible many NFL execs are at their job.

He is absolutely first round talent. However, leaving before the regular season is done may hurt him a little in some scouts/teams eyes.

I always get stuck in the middle on Marshall. For one, I see his point of protecting his stock and being able to go make NFL money. On the other hand, it still leaves a little bit of a sour taste because he did it mid season to the team I love.

I was not happy about Chase, but I was glad he did it before the season started.

I think you underestimate the career earnings of an engineer

You’re going to receive a lot of down votes on this, even though you’re absolutely right. From the fans perspective, we want these young men to play as much as possible both for our entertainment and for the benefit of our beloved Tigers football team. However, teenagers should not be obligated to risk millions of future dollars to satisfy the fans.

They'll never have that memory of beating UF in the fog as like 30 point dogs. That was an all time LSU classic.

Marshall cost himself some money by ducking Surtain

A good game against him and he’s picked in the teens and not the bottom of the 1st

If Ted Williams had that mentality in 1941 he would have finished with a .400 (.3995) average instead of .406.
