Millionaire, maybe. Multi millionaire, I doubt it unless he was already worth a million or so.

The govt. takes a big chunk and his agent gets a slice too.

Right. He is only seeing about 600/700k after agent fees and taxes.

It's honestly not a lot for the type of player he is.

Some of you are so silly. You understand taxes but not time value of money. $600-700k at age 21 should be life changing if he has any personal finance skills at all

The problem is not the bonus. Minor league salaries are low. Rookie ball and A league guys make less than a thousand dollars a week. A AAA player makes only 36K a year.

Smart guys are careful with that bonus because for 3, 4 or 5 years that has to help him keep going.

Brown did very well, but to really score he needs to get to the show.

600k is not what it used to be. Even if he invests that money he is still going to use a chunk to buy a house, car, and marriage. He needs to set up his life with that 600k.

Being conservative here lets say he invests $300k of his $1.4M at a 6% return. That's worth over $3M in 40 years alone so he basically never has to contribute to retirement savings again. Assuming he loses half his bonus in taxes he still has $400k left to live on over the next 5 years along with his $20-40k minor league salary to fund his MLB ambitions. Over a 5 year minor league career that's roughly $100-120k per year to live on (mostly after tax) assuming zero growth. And that does not include the per diems that minor leaguers get plus housing or any NIL he got at LSU. Most new grads are not getting that.

You can't look at this through your 50 year old POV. At 21 that's a great payday with massive upside

No question about that, and your road map is a good one.

If he’s smart he will follow your map, work hard to get to the bigs, and plan for the eventual life after playing pro ball whenever that comes.
