It has to be terrifying to face a dude who throws like that with 0 control.

he is unhittable

often because the ball is 27 inches outside or 4 inches behind your head.

My favorite non-star on the team

5 innings of work now still no hits allowed and 3 straight backward Ks just now

If he can stop walking people he could be the difference between making it to Omaha and winning it all.

Idk about that...
There's always room for a guy that doesn't allow a hit in like 7 or 8 innings . Even with a few walks sprinkled in

6'5' and over the top delivery he could be lights out if he could stay around the strike zone and develop another pitch.

Kind of like when he no hit bama through 6 in a regional as a freshman?? You clearly know nothing about him. Always plays better in bigger situations. He will play a major role on this team in near future.

I highly doubt we will see him beyond this season, an MLB team will throw some money his way this offseason and its the only leverage he will have left before being a senior.

MLB will glady take a chance on a guy who is practically unhittable even if he's extremely wild (which he is). They can develop him for 3-4 years in minors before he'd ever see an MLB game.

That all being said last nights outing was extremely encouraging. Only allowing 1 free pass to get 5 outs and once again not give up a hit is very impressive for him. It's also the first time he threw more strikes than balls in an appearance this year since his first one against Purdue-FW which is what he needs to be doing if he's ever going to get weekend time.

Yea I was gonna reference the same thing. Seems like ryno used to be a decent poster a long time ago but went the troll route for some reason

He's not wrong, you do not insert a reliever into an SEC game who has given away 10 free passes in 5.2 IP so far this year. His last 3 appearances prior to this one he gave up 2-3 free passes to get 3 outs. Last night's appearance was very encouraging for Mayers but for him to be put into a 6-5 game in the 7th inning against an SEC team, he will have to have more than 1 midweek appearance they can trust recently and its very obvious as to why. This board would be entire meltdown mode if he came in this weekend in a tight game, walked a few guys then gave up a hit for us to lose a 1 run lead and everyone will be saying "How can you throw a guy who has been mostly wild all season in that situation!?!?!"....and they wouldnt be wrong. We just gotta see Mayers be a little more consistent than 1 good outing every 4 times out there. Now if we're up 5-6 runs or more, sure, throw Mayers on the weekend, but he has to earn more trust to see tighter situations at the moment.

and on the other hand tbf he has 11 Ks and 0 hits allowed in 5.2 IP as well. His K/9 ratio ranks right there with the best in the country. He doesn’t have the control to be trusted yet but he could surprise.

I definitely want to see him on the weekends in this position at least. He hasn’t gotten an opportunity on the weekend yet that I’m aware of. He did pitch in game 1 in our only shutout though so surprised the opportunity hasn’t come yet but willing to bet it will soon
