It seems LSU defensive problems come from zone defense.

These kids cannot grasp Matt House's zone defense concepts for some reason. The worst example of this was pointed out by Carter ( LINK) when the Hogs converted the 2 point conversion.
LSU dropped SEVEN in coverage and ALL of the Hogs WRs were open.
Maybe House needs to just let the kids play man most of the time and take the lumps that come with it.

No pass rush on 3rd and long. Everything outside of that was good enough to separate ourselves Saturday.

what they are doing on third downs is not working
they are giving up way too many third and long completions
schematically at some point you have to try something different
I have no idea if the calls are too complicated
House spent some time in the NFL where maybe he is asking too much from the players in certain schemes instead of just letting them man up and go play
Brooks is definitely missed on the back end of this defense so you have to find a solution

You line #4 up on the RT and rush the QB. That alone will cut our 3rd down rate in half.

You have to be multiple!1!!1! No one runs straight man anymore!

No pass rush? KJ was under fire - it just didn't phase him.

FSU did it to the LSU offense in the second half of the first game and stymied the LSU offense. They ran cover zero on most of LSU’s third down attempts and were successful.
I understand that maning up risk a big play but zone is not working either.
It seems the zone concepts are forcing the defense to play passive.

You’re thinking first half when we had some sacks. Second half he had all day on 3rd and long.

I am not sure if Duce Chestnut could guard the 12' skeleton in my front yard and that thing hasn't moved in two weeks.

Just need to try something else defensively. Some of the calls were good and KJ made a good play and some were puzzling like the one for the two point conversion. Need Womack, Jefferson, and Yates to get more playing time. Give Welch a try at Corner. Then have Perkins rush the passer more, get creative and rush him from different spots.

We don’t blitz… that’s the problem

I don't think not blitzing is necessarily the problem but I don't think it's a bad "solution". They need to get creative and find ways to get pressure.
They're going to get exposed so now they have to decide how they want to get exposed and I'd rather go down swinging and playing aggressive than just sitting back and waiting for the punches to come.

terrible. they do not understand how to guard a guy who comes in your zone and when to hand him off and let him go when he clears that zone. sure you still will have guys sitting in the holes in the zone but you have to make those holes tighter.
way better off playing mano y mano. way less thinking. play off, play man press, depending on down and distance and matchups. may as well mix in cover 0 man blitzes if we have to play man. for that much zone where are the zone blitzes? that is bad coverage for the RZ. atrocious.

I'm not a big fan of how house calls a game.

I like manning up and only switch when the WRs cross. Of course an offense can exploit this when you are forced to switch from CB to LB but as a defense you don't switch with LB when they are covering the RB or TE.

Sack
pressure, RB leaks out and KJ just flips the ball to him for huge can - could have been tackled at LOS
pressure (with 4), busted play where WR get behind Alexander after Womack almost got KJ
Perkins roughing the passer

One of the biggest problems I continue to see is our ends crashing inside giving up containment. Happened on the 3rd qtr touchdown. If end holds outside containment then Wengo coming inside drives KJ to outside and we get sack. Instead left end takes inside angle and collides with Wengo. KJ runs out to the right which causes the CB to freeze for a second and he losses contact with receiver who walks into the end zone. I have seen this multiple times. Also in the 4th Qtr TD the Ark TE lines up on left side but releases along the back of the Oline to the left side and runs right across the front of the Right DE untouched. If the DE just steps up and hits him maybe takes the timing off or gives the DB/LB time to get to him but just lets him run by. Walks into the end zone .

yup. many ways we could mix it up. cover 0, cover 1, cover 2, hell we could play man on outside and use hook zones on middle of field aka combo coverage with whatever you want over the top cover 1 or 2. can only go cover 0 with all man or somebody will blow past a zone and with no safeties deep it will be a TD.

Drives me fricking insane. When I helped coach my son's 10U little league on defense the kids learned this concept faster than college kids.
