Is there a precedent in college basketball where an entire team quit?

Don’t recall ever seeing anything like this

Murray State 2022 is a 1 of 1.

The one time transfer waiver just got introduced.

How many other teams have faced significant sanctions and a new coach since the transfer portal has been around?

It’s the first time all of these factors are in play at the same time.
New coach
Possible sanctions
New transfer rule
New coach
Possible sanctions
New transfer rule

2020 LSU football is closest I can remember

This is a disastrous trifecta.
He might have to field a team of walk-ons

Probably not because until last year players who chose to transfer were not immediately eligible. That single rule change has changed the sport.
The closest, most recent example I can think of is Iowa St. They returned only 3 players from last year's roster after their HC was fired.
However, the fact that seemingly all of LSU's players are entering the portal should come as no surprise. None of the players were from Louisiana, and except for 2-3, none had any real connection to the state or the school. They were here to play for the coaching staff that recruited them. That staff is now gone. So it should come as no surprise they are choosing to explore their options...which they can by entering the transfer portal. They are putting themselves back on the "market" to be recruited again by any team...including LSU.
But it is not ONLY LSU players that are entering the portal. It is good players on good teams who are doing so. Why? Because they can. It is the equivalent of becoming a free agent in college basketball which basically allows them to test the market for their services. Good mid-major players are looking to play in major conferences (LSU just got two of those this week). Major conf. players are exploring the possibility of different roles at different schools which they feel may be in their best interest. And I suspect more than just a few players are putting themselves on the "market" to see what kind of monetary compensation they can generate...via NIL or "other" means. Also, just like professional free agency just because a player tests the market doesn't mean he won't ultimately "re-sign" with his current team.
This is now the world college sports exists in. Thus, you are going to see major roster turnover every year. You're probably also going to see really good players on really good teams enter the portal solely in an effort leverage big NIL deals..either from their own team or another team.
If Wade were fired 3 years ago you almost assuredly would not have seen the potential mass exodus of players that you are seeing now. And the ONLY reason for that is because it was much more prohibitive to transfer then. Guys being upset that the coach that recruited them was fired is nothing new. But many more of those guys stayed at their school because the alternative was to go elsewhere and sit out a year. Most probably figured it was just better to stay where they were and play for the new HC.

Well, except for the fact two transfers have decided to come to LSU just in the last 3 days.
McMahon has been on the job for nine days and people are already assuming he's going to have to mine the rec for players.

It wouldn’t hurt my feelings if LSU just shut the Basketball Program down for a year. Playing next season is going to be a joke anyway.

Really hope we retain Gaines, Fudge & Reid. We'll see. so much uncertainty.

Lol Gaines gone, thank Scott for the next 3 years. Folded and took a relevant program to now a dumpster fire. Give him extra money to put towards our 6-6 football team

I understand. I just don’t want to see blowout loss after blowout loss.

Everyone in the Portal MIGHT not actually leave LSU.

Is there a precedent in college basketball where an entire team quit?
