You forgot Mike Archer.

Don't blame the coach, blame Woodward

Curley Hallman is the worst coach in LSU history by far.
Posted on 2/2/25 at 7:58 pm to SportsGuyNOLA
Nope. We had one in swimming, Woodburn. He was worse. Smoke at least got us to Omaha and a Super Regional against Rice.
I would say Archer or Curly.
I would say Archer or Curly.

I meant in terms of my lifetime, Dale was at the end of his career and wasn't
winning big anymore. Make sense?

Curley was much worse, imo

Smokes record initially was not this bad,
Curley yes...Ed O when he became his full self.

Curley Hallman is the worst, no discussion. I'm not sure anyone underperformed expectations more than Nikki Fargas. Top 10 program before and after that barely went .500 in conference for a decade. She didn't even try. Trent Johnson was no better than McMahon-- he was just gifted a championship caliber roster in year 1. They are very similar actually-- nice guys, decent basketball coaches, no ability to get talent. Johnny Jones was the opposite but not much better than those two. He got players but couldn't coach. In my opinion, those are the only 5 that can even really be called bad over their whole tenure in the major sports in the modern area.

He had his best season, 31-3, without Morant.
Edit- Love this board. Downvoted for sharing something factual because it doesn't fit narrative.

Curley and it's not even close.

I will leave it at this. The ppl that would think McMahon is anywhere in the ball park of as bad of a coach as Curly is too young to have seen what really went on during that time. Curly was a dumpster fire on top of a train wreck bad.

He is until / if the team starts winning.

Worse than Curley Hallman?

McMahon has the better overall win % but in SEC play Hallman was better plus he had that major win McMahon never had.

Winning 4 games a year in football at LSU is well below atrocious. Winning 2.5 games in conference play in football at LSU is in no way comparable to whatever the frick is happening in bounce ball.
It's not even apples to oranges. It's apples to Plutonium.

They’re both atrocious, just stating the factual comparison.

Smoke wasn't a terrible coach. Curley was. McMahon isn't good for sure.

Since you very clearly don't follow "bounce ball", I'll help you out.
Hallman's SEC record at LSU was 10-21 (.322)
McMahon's SEC record is 12-32 (.272)...and that winning % is likely to DECREASE as the season goes along.
McMahon has only 2 more conference wins in bounce ball than Hallman had in football, despite (currently) 12 more games being played. Unless McMahon goes on a miraculous run the rest of this season or gets another year where he can stack up some wins vs. bad mid-major competition, he's going to finish his LSU career with the lowest overall winning % since 1965 and possibly the lowest SEC winning % in the history of the program.

I don't need any help. If you cats can't comprehend the outsized impact on the entire athletic department with a Curley Hallman-led football program and a Whateverhisnameis current BB coach having a bad run, I just don't know what else to tell you.
Basketball could go under .200 for several years and the casual fan would barely notice. I'm not saying it isn't important to win in basketball. I'm saying, in order of importance to the athletic department, winning in football is a 10 out of 10, baseball is a 7 out of 10 and MBB is 4 or 5.
