I don't think you understand the concept of an excuse.

Bad decisions, whether in hiring or recruiting, are not excuses. They're his fault.

Yes.
Not saying he has to win the natty… but just making the playoffs isn’t going to cut it

Correct. You put a team together with glue and make the SEC championship game, then you should only be trending up as you get more of your guys and culture into the program.

This

quote:

Matt House is an obvious excuse.

and this

quote:

Sure it’s his hire

are incongruous statements.

But are they, really? House's defense in year 1 was not bad relative to the previous two years. Year two was simply bad. I think if the 2023 defense had performed like the 2022 defense, LSU had a legitimate shot at a CFP birth.

There are always reasons a team underperforms. Those all fall on the head coach. Some of them can be excusable.

This season should produce a playoff birth. Only losing Nuss (and then probably early, or if it is given as the reason the committee left LSU out) would seem like a single reason that would make missing the playoffs excusable.

He loses that opener against Clemson, and this place is going to burn to the ground.

House was ok the year prior.

The defense had NO excuse for being THAT bad. Average? Sure. Even slightly below average? But not one of the worst in the nation. That was on BK to fix. Even with just an average/slightly below average defense LSU is probably in the CFP. Daniels and the offense were that good. Anything short of getting completely dominated by Alabama and Ole Miss and LSU is 11-1 that season. BK wasn't calling the defensive plays, but he can dictate the overall approach...hyper aggressive, bend-but-don't break, etc.

2023 will go down as one of the biggest wasted opportunities in LSU football history.

Yes. They are. An excuse is literally excusing something away because it's out of their control.

Defensive coordinator is one of the things most in control of the HC.

Yes. He should have a top 4 finish with this roster.

It can’t be understated how much it hurt to lose Greg Brooks that year. We were still bad at CB, but that was a huge hit to the defense. Also DL was in shambles without a position coach

& he really had no reason to fire him after winning the SEC West the year before. Although it does seem obvious looking back at the 4 losses in 2022 (giving up 24 points, 40, 38, & 50)

Yes, I'm sure House's attitude, aptitude, and treatment of players completely turned on a dime between the two seasons and there were zero warning signs that he was going to be in charge of the worst defense the school has ever seen.

Sure it’s his hire, but still a valid excuse.

How is this a valid excuse? He hired a washed NFL position coach and then gave him a contract extension after one season.

...only to backtrack and hire the guy that was already on the staff when he fricking got here!

Pre-NIL I'd buy this....I was, and still am in favor of BK. the issues he's had are:

terrible roster, but made lemonade out of lemon shite in year 1
DL coach leaving for NFL
Next DL coach getting cancer, not coaching, not recruiting
limited NIL support
focusing efforts on high school recruiting (i was a fan of, but times changed)
Matt House having a solid year 1, then completely losing the D in year 2

lots to overcome while building a roster, a staff, and seemingly retarded, impatient fanbase.

now that he has focused on NIL support and the portal, we will see if he can coach the horses he's brought in. I think he'll do fine now. if not, time to move on in a year or 2.

so he was supposed to hire the LB coach from a defense that just finished 6-7 to be his DC?

And the whole landscape of the football world changed after that. But I think you already know that- it just doesn’t fit your narrative.
