Les Miles speaks on UM job and his hero Bo Schembechler

“I love Michigan,” Miles said. “We just didn’t have the opportunity. It does break my heart. I love the place. There were things I was fortunate to accomplish that I only give credit to Michigan for the experiences I had that allowed me to do some of things I did. I thank the time I was there and how much I enjoyed being around the Michigan players and Coach Schembechler.”

Miles said it just wasn’t meant to be.

“I don’t know that I was ever really close (to getting the job),” he said. “I was fortunate to be at a decent place (as LSU’s head coach). It didn’t work out and I’m sad that it didn’t.

“It did not have to do with the amount of money, it had to do with the decisions that would be made on behalf of Michigan if in fact I would be the head football coach. I just needed some backing and some strength. It was probably too far away. It’s certainly a place I loved. Sometimes it’s just not in the cards.”

Full interview in link, but this part stuck out. What does “decisions that would have to be made” mean in this context?

I don’t think he meant “decent” they way you’re taking it. Pretty sure he’s meaning the exact opposite of that, as in LSU is/was a top program while he was here. Sarcasm

It's not like he's known for word choice in the first place

I wouldn't take it as any sort of slight

Are you talking about THE Les Miles, the most articulate orator LSU has ever had as a head coach?

Rantards like Rickdaddy. Don't rub it in, they bought it hook, line and sinker.

Knowing Miles, I would tend to think it’s just an innocent word choice.

But what concerns me more was that he said it “didn’t work out” with LSU. On what planet is making tens of millions of dollars at LSU (even for not doing anything for part of it), holding the job for ten+ years, and winning a national title “not working out?”

Does he have no concept of what he actually had here, right in the palm of his hand? Does he not see how he screwed that up?

You have to look at all of this in the context of what was happening then, not from a perspective of revisionist history.

This was 2007. Les had only been at LSU for 3 seasons and while he was shaking the fans longing for Saban after two really good first two seasons, the fans had just turned on him after blowing a national championship shot by inexplicably losing the final game of the season, at home, to an unranked Arkansas team.

He didn't have deep LSU roots at that time, the fans were mad, and there was a chance to return to his beloved alma mater...a chance that might never come again if he didn't get/take the job in 2007.

Fortunately or unfortunately (depending upon how you viewed Les's tenure at LSU), it appears in-fighting at Michigan prevented him from actually being offered the job. Had it been offered, I think this confirms Les would have likely taken it. And it would have been understandable had he done so. It would be like Scott Woodward leaving a high paying job to come to his alma mater

So was he the soccer mom version (moral, upright, loyal husband) most believe him to be?

FIFY

Regardless, we know Miles’ heart was at Michigan. It’s no longer relevant to us.

I saw this posted on a UM board today. Mod hints it is accurate. Sounds like sour grapes to me but idk

quote:

Les didn't have great relationships with some higher up Michigan athletics executives. There had been rumors of him in his past that i don't believe. From my understanding(from talking to some former players and other in the know) Les Miles was never going to get the Michigan job after the recruitment of Jai Eugene(5 star CB from Louisiana). Jai was locked into Michigan and wanted to come here. All of a sudden on signing day, Jai's father(who was in jail) was suddenly out of jail and had a job, his mother had a new house, and other benefits were given. After that, I believe it was Bo that was FURIOUS that Les would use sketchy recruiting to take a recruit from Michigan. It's reported that Bo told Les he'd never coach at Michigan.

It seems like it. In "Les speak" it looks like he's saying if the negotiations went the way he had hoped he would have taken the Michigan job.

Have stated numerous times on here that UM NEVER wanted Miles due to past issues. BUT many on here still to this day think he turned them down and praise the Have a Nice Day like Chuck Norris said it!! He was NEVER close to getting that gig!!!
