He didn't have deep LSU roots at that time, the fans were mad, and there was a chance to return to his beloved alma mater...a chance that might never come again if he didn't get/take the job in 2007.

Fortunately or unfortunately (depending upon how you viewed Les's tenure at LSU), it appears in-fighting at Michigan prevented him from actually being offered the job. Had it been offered, I think this confirms Les would have likely taken it. And it would have been understandable had he done so. It would be like Scott Woodward leaving a high paying job to come to his alma mater

This is a great take, and one that I've echoed here before.

I said at the time of he stayed it would eventually end badly for him here. Too many people just never liked him and couldn't get over the Saban effect, especially since he was back in the division.

I do believe that he could have potentially campaigned for the job and won over the decision makers to get it even though Carr was totally against him, and that he probably planned to do just that had we not gotten into the NCG.

Everyone talks about the "damn strong team" part of the presser, but it's the part where he says "ask me AFTER" that show he just wasn't ready to discuss anything while he and his team were focusing on winning an SEC title.

But when Pitt upset WVU it changed everything and he was totally focused on Ohio State. I think he saw that as a sign honestly.

I loved his tenure and obviously the NC he brought us, but I've always felt sorry that he had to pass on the chance to pursue the job at his alma mater.

Les Miles was never going to get the Michigan job after the recruitment of Jai Eugene(5 star CB from Louisiana). Jai was locked into Michigan and wanted to come here. All of a sudden on signing day, Jai's father(who was in jail) was suddenly out of jail and had a job, his mother had a new house, and other benefits were given. After that, I believe it was Bo that was FURIOUS that Les would use sketchy recruiting to take a recruit from Michigan. It's reported that Bo told Les he'd never coach at Michigan.

That’s all BS.

It wasn’t Bo that was opposed to Miles at UM, it was Carr.

And Jai’s dad??

No, Jai had a kid and decided to stay close to home, similar to K Faulk.

That post is pretty off base.

Yeah I thought the reason Jai ended up choosing us was because he had a kid.

And the beef was with Carr. He didn't want Les.

Les wasn’t getting the job because UM knew he was a terrible coach. Unlike the dimwits running LSU at the time

This would never happen. Scott’s way too smart of a business man to let emotions dictate his professional choices. He’s no Joe Alleva.

What was Michigan record after they passed on Miles for the next 3 years?

Yeah that bunch that was in charge at the time really knew what they were doing.

114 wins, 34 losses. 3 appearances in the SEC Championship Game, winning 2 of those games. 2 appearances in the National Championship Game winning one. 7 double digit win seasons in 11 full years. Would have been 8 if not for the McNeese State game being cancelled.

Yep, that's the record of a "terrible coach."

Jai Eugenes father was not in jail during his recruitment..I know him..he was working for Jefferson Parish Facilities at the time...It wasn't til a couple of years later he was busted for 'drug possession'...so that part of he story don't stick.

FTR, I still love Les. It was time to part, but he's a great guy and I'll always fondly remember the good times he gave LSU.

Seem to remember the LSU brass giving Les 24 hours or so to make up his mind about which job he wanted. But the timing of Michigan messing with his mind going into the Natty makes sense now, if they were perturbed about the recruit flip.

We won despite him. His teams did great things while he was here and many games were won but, in the same breath, he had teams that underachieved and he often showed his limitations of being a leader all the while looking like a window licker idiot on TV. Hell, I often said, "yeah, but he is our idiot."

If those stats only told the whole story. You hang on to those stats though as you choose to remember and honor his time here any way you want.

I will also remember him for almost losing several games because of his lack of coaching blunders and then there were the games that he did loss because of similar blunders.

I will remember him for his numerous staff hires and promotions that were disasters and also the ones that were homeruns.

His inability to field teams without a "quality" quarterback over prolonged stretches of his tenure. How many seasons did we have a solid QB at the helm? Imagine what his stats and trophy case would have been like had he been able to.

Actually his record in 2007 at the time of the UM rumors was 33-6 with two West wins, an SEC title, and three top five finishes.

That UM brass had the same crystal ball as half of our astute fanbase that knew Miles was terrible after the 05 Tennessee game

He was 85-20 after 2012 with two SEC titles an NC and six out of eight 10+ win REGULAR SEASONS and those same idiots think his good friend who just hired him at Kansas wasn’t serious about hiring him at Arkansas at the time

What a miserable way to remember the best stretch in the history of the program you claim to love

Yeah, we were married for 50 years, had three beautiful and successful children, traveled the world together, etc., but what I’ll always remember is how bad her cooking was, that time she bounced a check, complained when I went to bowling night, and farted in her sleep.

Happy Anniversary my love!!

He would have probably done just as good or better than Harbaugh.
