Only person who'd take offense at what Miles said, is someone looking for things to be offended by.
Miles is a Michigan alum, he played under an iconic coach. Michigan is a nationally known and respected program, one that I think is still at or near the very top for alltime wins. Any time they get a new coach, the standard is "can Michigan elevate back to co-equal with Ohio State, and contend for national titles?"
They have one of the most recognizable uniforms and helmets in all of sports, and any casual fan can hum along to the music their band plays. You can hear it in the other room and say "oh, that's Michigan".
What person would expect him NOT to want to have that job, or have a spot in his heart for it?
Re the "things didn't work out", it's just the simple truth of the matter. He had the LSU job and was preparing to play for a national title, after a pair of consecutive 11 win seasons and top 5 finishes. You don't step down from that, for anything, unless you're Nick Saban and want to coach an NFL team.
And that was the only time the Michigan job was open.
Had it come open 3 years earlier, he goes there instead of LSU, I'm pretty certain of that, and I don't fault him.
Saban left LSU for his dream job. Miles didn't. I respect the commitment he showed to to the university.

There was a recent post on here by a guy who attended some event with Les and Kathy.
Les spoke glowingly of LSU, said Louisiana will always be home.
If you took offense to those comments, that’s on you.

It was a fun time and he is a fantastic man by all indications. His staffs were able to bring in truckloads of NFL talent and had some inconsistent success along the way. It was a good run and most of the time I was glad to have been a part of it.
I thought it was a terrible hire though. He could not coach his way out of a bag. Lie to yourself if you want. We won despite him at times.

But the timing of Michigan messing with his mind going into the Natty makes sense now, if they were perturbed about the recruit flip.
Well, it was the timing of Herbstreit's story that forced his hand at the press conference. Where did Herbie play again?

You Les people have no clue. The man was a terrible coach. Period. I get it tho. Y’all as F#ing retarded as he is. Fluke 2 loss championship with key Saban players,Offense consistently ranked at the bottom of ncaa, but he was a great coach

I thought it was a terrible hire though.
That said, Miles coming from Oklahoma St with a winning record, was a better hire than Orgeron being elevated from interim, with an overall losing record (horrible at Ole Miss, and just mediocre as interim at LSU and USC).

We don't win the 2007 Fla game without him having the balls to go for it over and over on 4th down with Hester.
We very likely don't win the 2010 Bama game if he doesn't pull the Peterson reverse on 4th down.
2011- it was his decision to pound Oregon with HUNH power runs, and that drive was what put Oregon away.
And say what you want about the Lee/Jefferson saga, but his handling of it in the first Bama game is why we won that. Bama had Lee rattled and he was throwing picks, and were it not for the defense we'd have been dead. JJ was the changeup they weren't ready for, and that made all the difference in the game.

I too regret he never coached Michigan

Don't expect too much.
These are the same fans who hate Simmons for criticizing the NBA rules.

I'm not bitter about it. I enjoyed the ride, the good, the bad and the ugly!
He was a good HC that got good players that won despite his simplistic philosophies and plans. Some around here talk like we should erect a statue of him. I'm thankful we had him except the times when I wasn't. His quirky, moronic personality was marketable.
On the surface, both hires, based on coaching W-L records alone, were not good ones IMO. I'm not going to try argue which was the better hire based on that. It's like arguing who is the tallest midget.
Miles was 28-21 overall, 16-16 Big 12 and 1-2 in bowl games beating Southern Miss and losing to Ole Miss and trucked by Ohio State. We hired him less than a week later.

he was at a program coming off sanctions that failed to have a .500 season 10 of the previous 11 years prior to his tenure

And beat Oklahoma twice in four years at Okie St. They won despite him there as well.
What a lucky coach. Will Kansas keep the lucky streak going?
BTW, What team won as much as LSU despite their Head Coach for 12 years, anywhere any place? Much less the SEC west. Im interested in your answer.
Remember LSu football during Les' tenure however you choose. Like Les lost several games because of his coaching blunders. He was at LSU for 12 years can you name more than 3?
How about Urban Meyer during that same span? Saban?
Maybe you are getting the new coach mixed up with the previous coach?
You dont win 9-10 games a year for a decade in the SEC west despite the head coach my friend, but have it your way.

Coming off sanctions?? They got popped the same time as OU in like '88 or '89.
I won't argue the program wasn't a hot mess but you don't need to make it sound like he inherited the team fresh off probation, it was like 9-10 years after.

You hang on to those stats though as you choose to remember and honor his time here any way you want.
Thanks. I will.

I will also remember him for almost losing several games because of his lack of coaching blunders and then there were the games that he did loss because of similar blunders.
Good for you.

I will remember him for his numerous staff hires and promotions that were disasters and also the ones that were homeruns.
You sound like a blast to hang out with.

Actually his record in 2007 at the time of the UM rumors was 33-6 with two West wins, an SEC title, and three top five finishes.
That UM brass had the same crystal ball as half of our astute fanbase that knew Miles was terrible after the 05 Tennessee game
He was 85-20 after 2012 with two SEC titles an NC and six out of eight 10+ win REGULAR SEASONS and those same idiots think his good friend who just hired him at Kansas wasn’t serious about hiring him at Arkansas at the time
But...but...but he was a he was a terrible coach.

You skipped right over the 07 to 12 seasons for some reason? His NC was in 2007.
He won the SEC in 2011 and he was never better than the 3rd best coach in the West the rest of the way.
To be factual, he was 80-25 from 2008-2016 and had a 43-23 SEC record. 1 SECCG title, 1 BCSCG loss and 4-4 bowl record. He had 4 10+ win season out of his last 8 full seasons.

Offenses during the schembechler days were very vanilla. Les Miles was a fool for trying to stick with that crap at LSU once everybody else went multiple on offense. He cost us the 2011 national championship with that bullsh*t, and that's why to this day I do not miss him - unlike a lot of goo hoos around here that still want to suck his d**k.
