Good stats. However that defense didn’t have an offense that averaged 1:48 per scoring drive.

Those numbers look good because we held Ga Southern to like 98 total yards.

It’s been pretty bad after that.

We still have Utah State, Arkansas and Ole Miss though.

True.

It may balance out statistically with Texas being the best offense in the first half of the season balancing out Alabama being the best offense of the second half of the season, with cupcakes being equal - at least when talking about LSU's defensive stats. Offensively, LSU will face many more tougher defenses than so far n the season, so I expect the offensive numbers to drop some. Luckily, it's the case with almost all the top P5 teams, so the stats may end up being relatively the same..

In the first four games, most missed tackles have been in the secondary - namely, 5 and 7. D line has missed a couple, LB’s a few.

Our DB legacy has been judged, in large part, by how physical they are and how well they tackle in open space.

It's something I noticed when watching the Auburn A&M game. A&M had a lot of plays where they threw bubble screens or short passes to a receiver with 1 on 1 coverage and the DB made the tackle for little to no gain. Each time that happened i threw my hands up saying that would have gone for 15 if they did it against LSU.

Would pointing out that 50 plays by GSU is 8 fewer than any LSU opponent ran last year, and that number is severely skewing your "data" bother you?

Because it's a fact.

That's what I've been noticing. Individual errors. Not tackling properly, which is a huge concern.

I hope Aranda and crew spend this bye week fixing that.

Not that big of a difference is it? People need to stop using A&M game as an anomaly for some of these stats. That game doesn't matter for most stats.

Fair enough.

So is it fair to interpret the stats posted as meaning LSU has just as good a defense this season (current) as they did last season?

I wonder if they will get the missed tackles and assignments rectified. Who knows.

We simply don't have a middle linebacker.

18 for 150 seems low.

There were some posters who were convinced White would be easily replaced. They were wrong.

The 2019 stats are skewed, thanks to a stellar defensive effort against Georgia Southern. The last three games deserve more scrutiny.

In the pre-season we had the best Linebacking group of all time.

Ok, let's do some math

LSU had 70.4 plays/game last year in 13 games:
70.4 * 13 = 915 plays

915 - 31 (A&M OT plays) = 884 total regulation plays

884 / 13 = 68 plays/game

Our defense played ok (and not many plays) against the two smaller schools we played (who were simply over matched).

(# of plays shown below does not include punts and field goals):

Georgia Southern (50 plays)
Northwestern (64 plays).

*Our defensive talent was far superior to these teams and we were able to force their offenses into turnovers or punts.

This leaves the two games that raised everyone's eyebrows:

Texas (85 plays)
Vanderbilt (72 plays)

*Our defense was not on the field a lot in the Texas and Vandy games simply because of the way our offense operates; they were on the field a lot because they couldn't get the other offense off the field enough. If it was strictly a product of 'how the offense operates' we would have seen more defensive plays in the Ga Southern and NW State games too.

Severely??

Why do yall say "but muh GASO game" and "but my A&M game" without doing the math???

Minus the GASO game, our defense is playing 74 plays per game. You think this is severe? It means it's one more drive. You think one more opponent's offensive drive is the difference between GASO defensive performance and the other games defensive performances?

This isn't severe and it doesn't tell us anything. Severe would be if our defense is playing 4-6 more drives per game - and that's not the case. Our defense is playing roughly the same amount of plays (on average) as last year.

You have to account for the fact that Georgia Southern was a one dimensional team.

Back out that game and we're giving up 394 a game, 74 plays and 5.32 yards per play.

And as someone else noted, you back out Aggie and our 2018 stats improve as well.

The fact remains, we're on the field more, giving up more total yards and also a MEANINGFULLY more yards per play. This defense is mediocre. Terrible tackling and no pass rush.

opposing team will run less plays if it is frequently more easy to score
