The Rant truly doesn’t understand why the contracts are big. The Head Coach has enormous impact on Revenue for the University. Winning a Championship is NOT the primary reason for big contracts. The State of Indiana is spending all kinds of money for IU games and gear and as long as they compete for Big 10 and playoffs they will spend. Head Coaches that keep fan interest, engagement, and Revenue high will get paid.

Cuban is an IU graduate. This article doesn’t give that amount, but recently was reported that it was 50 million he donated….
Cuban told CBS the amount he gave IU Athletics was a “big number” that wasn’t tethered to a specific cause. But obviously his connection with Cignetti was the inspiration. And IU was able to sign several high profile transfers, highlighted by quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
A 1981 IU graduate, Cuban’s initial billions came primarily from his passion for IU basketball. Mark Cuban and Indiana
University head football coach
Curt Cignetti developed a friendship based on their shared Pittsburgh roots. The relationship was the direct inspiration for a substantial donation Cuban made to the Indiana athletics program in 2025, a rare instance of Cuban giving to the sports side of his alma mater.

He is genuinely a likable character. Indiana is an underdog story. It’s a good storyline for college football. Good for Coach Cignetti and Indiana.

Meh; he’s not that good anyway
He’s about the best Indiana will ever get. I don’t blame them for locking him up.

Welp. They will once again suck. Performance based contracts are the only solution. See Brian Kelly since inheriting Coach Os SEC Championship winning team his first season
