No you can't. In terms of campus location? Sure, that's easy. But not in terms of reputation, recruiting area, conference tie-ins, and investment in facilities/remaining competitive.

Really? I can think of at least 10 jobs better than LSU. Baton Rouge/LSU isn't the Shangri-la a lot of locals think it is.

Go look at any list ranking the top jobs in CFB and LSU will be up there.

USA Today has it as the 3rd best job in the country.

247 ranks it 5th

It's a top power 5 job. Recruiting base in LA is sick!

Add some national recruits and you're a top 5 team yearly with a good head coach.

Soon to find out whom we can attract!

The last three head coaches have won NCs. Two were of those coaches are of questionable intelligence, with neither having served as a coordinator. This is a destination job of your desire is to coach at a top 5 program that is a proven winner. It is not if your ultimate desire is to be a HC in the NFL. If Les wasn’t such an idiot , he would likely still be here. O could have coached here until he dropped dead had he not lost his mind after 1/14/20.

The last 3 coaches have won a NC here.
LSU pays coaches very well. O got bumped to the 4th highest paid coach after the NC.
You have a talent rich state with very little in state competition for recruits.
The SEC is the best conference and about to be a super conference with Texas and OU.
Top facilities.
Staff hires paid well so good support.
If successful LSU coaches are state royalty.

For the right coach LSU is a Top 5 destination.

If two doofuses like Les Miles and Ed Orgeron can win championships, what could a good coach do here?

Miles and Orgeron won a National Championship here! What do you think a a real coach would do here. LSU is definitely a Top 5 probably Top 3 job.

if saban would have made it his final destination, the bear, bowden, and paterno would all be in second place in terms of popularity among college coaches.

Define stepping stone? To me that's a job you take, hoping to prove yourself so you can get a better job, i think LSU is way past that, now that doesn't mean you might not have a guy that wants to try the NFL or maybe if his "dream job" or alma mater comes calling he might leave. But LSU has won 3 titles with 3 different coaches this century. We've proven willing to pay top dollar for not only the HC but assistants and have spent on facilities, so no its not a "stepping stone"

Please Note: that DOES NOT mean you can just hire whoever you want (or whoever the fans on the boards want) there are a million and one reasons someone may not want to change jobs.

Serious question was Alabama number 1 before Saban went there? Or was it just top 5?

Yes. Do you really think 7.5 million a year with the recruiting base LSU has in the best division in college football is a stepping stone? Seriously? Not to mention posting the best football season in college football history. Just because a school goes through a rough patch and needs to make changes does not make it a stepping stone. If that is the case, USCw, Notre Dame, Penn State, Florida, Auburn, Michigan and a lot more are just stepping stones. LSU has been more successful over the last 20 years than all of those.

In other words, will the next hire come to stay (as long as he is winning) or use this as an interim or stepping stone job... I know every candidate will have a different M.O., but what do you prefer?

In the 21st century LSU has won three national championships. Only Alabama has more.

How is that not elite?
