Because the SEC is the only real football out there. Just because you win outside of the SEC, doesnt mean you can win in the SEC. BK is a prime example, and another would be Napier.

You can EASILY out athlete other teams when they are average. LSU did it for years with Les. But when it takes ACTUAL coaching, he crumbles.

Why is that stupid? We had a good enough offense in 2022 to compete for the playoff and more than good enough in 2023.

Isn’t that the definition of setting the program back 2 years?

I know he said that, and I know a lot of people bought into it, but Notre Dame recruiting has remained consistently on par with LSU’s.

I made a post about this a few years back and got like 700 downvotes.

Kelly can't coach in the sec. ND schedule is made for Ws.

On paper he was a good hire. Won at Cincy won at ND won in Div 2. His Age coaching style the switch to pay for play all did him in. He was made for a different era

Keeping Sloan is ultimately his undoing. You gave him a chance following a lightning in a bottle season by Jayden.

Last season was pretty clear he wasn’t ready for this job. Bringing him back in a season that was crucial for your future was absurdly stupid…but these are the drawbacks of the job security we gave him

I think Kelly is also now trying to rule from afar because he’s kind of checked out. Guys in the locker room don’t respect a dude they see isn’t putting the work in but then shows up on game days hollering and screaming. It’s fake

That’s why I specified skill talent. What great WRs did ND ever have? QBs were almost always mid.

You can pretty much flip a team for a yr with 18 mil.

Despite glaring holes at OT and RB, this roster is good enough to be competitive against any team in the nation.

It really makes no sense. Not sure how this guy let the team get physically soft, lost the running game and had us getting blown out every year in Tiger Stadium. I just don’t get it. He has EVERY resource imaginable.

I really agree with this. Perfectly suited for someone like Kiffin, though.

His generation of great coaches hate the current State of the game . They were program builders who relied on 3-5 yrs guys completely buying in. This Shitshow thats been created is a pathetic joke. He’s got to be having thoughts of hanging it up. I could see an orchestrated resignation in the next 18 months.

I pretty much had the same idea that a lot of folks did. Kelly had tough, solid-to-really good teams at Notre Dame

Then you didn’t watch ND play football during his tenure there.

ETA: Regarding toughness, go look at Teo’s comments about the national championship game. They were terrified of Bama in pregame, and got absolutely dominated. 2012 was by far his best team at ND. Before last season, that was the only ND team in my 33 years of life that I thought was a genuinely great team (maybe 2018 and 2020 are close).

Then how is Freeman doing it? If your argument is “it’s with Kelly’s players” then you prove Kelly was a bad coach. If it’s that Freeman is getting better players than your point above is wrong.

And the first defensive staff was just a disaster and truly set the program back at least 2 seasons.

For a lot of his faults, he has no problem moving on from assistants quickly.

The entire landscape of CFB changed since Kelly got here.

Kelly was a coup and could have been a great hire for the previous era. Woodward didn’t anticipate how drastically things were about to change, and unfortunately for all involved, Kelly didn’t either.

Kelly left what might be the easiest place to win in the new era for the place that was primed to win in the old one.

Crazy to think that he likely has a title and certainly would have been in the playoff every year had he just read the tea leaves and stayed put.

Maybe him doing that would have forced Woodward to make the hire he should have back then and hopped on the Lane Train.

LSU vs ND would have made for a great rivalry in the new era

Is he doing it? I watched Freeman get blown out in a title game last year too. And, if the skill talent level is higher, I think that points to ND opening things up more. Brady Quinn basically said that’s what happened after Kelly left. When Freeman was hired, ND wouldn’t pay to let him hire Andy Ludwig as OC.

Exactly, its why saban retired

You have to be a semi pro type coach and coerce the players to play hard

You can't mandate it anymore

You forgot "young" or at least "younger".

These kids are free agents and don't have to put up old hardheaded men that throw them under the bus.

Some sort of contract for the players would probably help coaches like BK.

Untill then, we need a fired up young guy full of energy.

very good comments - my two cents - Kelly was known for good offenses and offensive linemen
1 Kelly and the staff etc completely miscouted the trenches - every opponent has least one hell fire defensive end- who is ours ?
2.the college game has evolved into who has the fastest quarterback then work on his accuracy
3 anyone who has ever coached knows that it is almost impossible to win with younger players our freshmen offensive linemen against senior opponents should have been seen as probable disaster which it has been

Kelly became complacent, lazy, and unmotivated. He also was not innovative or energetic enough to successfully adapt to the new CFB recruiting and business model.

I’m with you OP. I thought BK was a fantastic hire. 2022 seemed like we were on the right track.
