Was absolutely eviscerated in coverage. The tape was brutal. That kid should never be asked to play deep safety or be manned up in coverage in the slot he looked like a LB playing safety. It’s utterly baffling he initially came off the bench first before Jhase Thomas

Well he is a LB playing safety.
Luckily we figured it out on the fly and the defense looked much better in the 2H, which also conincinded with us going back to an aggressive blitzing defense.
Hopefully Lane learned his lesson from the 1H.. worry ab the offense and let Blaker cook.

It’s clear lane let his emotions get in the way of game planning for this game. He should’ve trusted Blake baker to cook up a defensive game plan I mean he held Trinidad to 24 pts last year. He got too involved in the initial defensive game plan. His history with Trinidad ended up hurting us the defensive gameplan was having too much respect and fear for Trinidad’s ability. This defense is at its best when you let them go hunt you kept them on a leash for a half.

Also welcome to year 1 of a rebuild. I like that we signed a bunch of 2Y transfers though.
We have also had terrible injury luck so far.. nothing you can do if guys keep dropping like flies.

He was put in a terrible spot being asked to cover deep middle 3rd and that is not something he has been asked to do. He should be playing at the LOS and is really a linebacker that was a bad move by the staff but they adjusted very quickly. It happens. Not his fault.

He is a weak side linebacker who can help a bit in coverage. He can and I believe will be good when he's playing his proper position.
It was ridiculous how we were asking him to cover the deep middle third with 11 seconds in the half remaining when a combination like Chambliss and Deuce Alexander are surely going to attack him knowing that they only had 1 play left before kicking a field goal.. That without question should have been a guy like Jhase Thomas if we're going with someone to replace Spears.
That was the most mad that I was for the entire game. Total coaching error by Baker and the DB coaches. Should have been 20-7 at half, which is still bad, but it would have been significantly more surmountable than the 3 score deficit.

Jimcoily was the backup to Spears at STAR, thats why he came on the field first there
Spears is a true safety with great coverage skills but is physical enough to be a linebacker basically too. Jimcoily is more a true linebacker who lacks the coverage skills to really play STAR IMO but can be more physical in smaller spaces.
They were right to switch over to Jhase Thomas, but with him you lose a bit of physicality at the STAR position as well to gain the coverage ability.
I dont think people understand STAR is really supposed to be a hybrid/safety/LB, and thats not what Jhase Thomas really is at all; you're really just playing a nickel basically at his size. Thomas is 6'1 180, where as Spears and Jimcoily are easily well in excess of 200+.

I agree with all this. The move might be to have Thomas and Cooley at safety and move Benefield to star. We eventually went to PJ taking the slot and put Jackson in his spot on the boundary. Which is basically just nickel. Or Cooley could play star. We’ll probably change our base personnel based on the opponent and change up looks in game depending on situations. But the guys mentioned above are gonna be the ones on the field and moved around. Pickett is probably the only DB who will just stay where he’s at. But I don’t think we see much CJ going forward unless there are more injuries. He’ll play some to keep guys fresh, but not in pivotal moments.

And this is the challenge for any college sport going forward....building depth in an era of immediate expectations given NIL.

Wait, you want me to believe the staff didnt evaluate him, at that position as the backup, before Saturday? Youre telling me he had no reps back there?

How do you know this?
You think kiffin told baker how to run his defense?
