Baker did well for 3.5 quarters. The prevent defense in the last 7 minutes he is at fault for.

We got a ton of pressure. Several sacks and a lot of forced throws. We forced two fumbles on quick pressures and were very unlucky not recover either and had 2/3 batted balls on blitzes that we were very unlucky to not pick off.

We tackled much better and had guys generally in possession every play. On two of USCs touchdown drives they made incredible one handed catches. Moss had some absurd throws with guys right in his face.

Our safeties still suck and so do our non Stamps corners. Anytime Moss did have time to throw it was almost a guaranteed completion, but I’m not sure there’s much we can do about that the year. We just don’t have the talent to get coverage sacks or stops against good offenses

I think we’re just grasping at straws, or desperate because last year was so incredibly bad.

I only saw maybe a negligible improvement from last year.

Everyone in my section last night couldn’t stand the defense. Idk if it looked different on TV, but in real life they looked shite.

Let’s be honest the only reason USC didn’t score 34 was because the ran out of time in the first half to go for the endzone, tried a chipshot FG and missed

our D gave up 7.7 yards per play. And that's not skewed by a small number of huge plays. USC moved the ball consistently all night.

I know there are a bunch of new rules in college football. Did they start awarding additional points for moving the ball between the 20s?

I'm not sure what you were expecting. I had very low expectations for this defense because, while it's great to dream on a new coach just fixing everything on his own, you still need players. And we knew there was a problem with quality players on that side of the ball, that Baker hasn't yet had the time to overhaul.

But while there were some busted coverages at times, we had them held to 13 points with about 8 minutes to go. I never dreamed we could have had a lead in the 4th quarter if our offense had scored under 20 points by then. But, there we were. And yes, even factoring in the missed field goal, USC would still only have had 16 points, and we'd still have had the lead. And let's not forget that the defense was screwed over when we took a bad penalty and had to kick to their dangerous returner, who burned us and put the defense in an immediate jam.

The defense definitely imploded in those last 8 minutes, but if the offense could have simply picked up a foot on third down, and maybe put a drive together, we wouldn't be talking about this. That's why Baker is getting a pass.

I agree we were better than last year.

So that’s the standard now? Just be better than the worst defense is school history?

I disagree, the defense is in great hands. The penalties, inability to run the ball, and not throwing the ball downfield cost LSU the game.

Riley has averaged 30 ppg except one year in his career.

You’re telling me that giving up an offensive coach’s average on year removed from having the worst defense in the history of the program is not where we should be?

If you told me we held USC to 20 points and we had the ball after the two minute warning, I would have taken that every damn day of the week.

If you didn’t see significant improvement on defense compared to last year, you weren’t watching.

Was it perfect? No but the defense played more than good enough to leave with a win.

That’s the expectation. You don’t go from worst ever to top 25 defense the first game of the next season.

Do you not expect the defense to continue to improve?

We had a ton of pressure almost all night, what game did you watch?

Multiple chances at turnovers on some batted balls that just didn’t fall our way

There was no doubt in my mind USC would drive down the field and score

That’s so damn sad

New staff, same results

Baker is night and day different, what are you talking about.

You guys are forgetting just how bad our defense was last year. We couldn’t stop anything.

The defense was garbage. I know it’s partly a talent issue currently, but whatever scheme he used last night was horrible. USC moved the ball at will

The front 7 was greatly improved, especially in terms of pass rush. We got to the fricking QB twice with 3 man rushes. If you can’t see this then you just don’t understand the game of football.

The secondary still needs a lot of work, but Stamps was good and Woodland was solid for a true freshman playing in a big atmosphere. Hopefully Zy Alexander gets back soon and they can build on the young guys like they did with Campbell and Jones on the OL 2 years ago.

I agree but that final drive defensively was piss poor

I hate the bend don’t break/keep the ball in front of you mentality. At some point you have to press and get physical and go win the game. Jmo

First game trying to overhaul a historically bad defense, I think it’s ok to give him a pass

every time USC wanted to move the ball, they did so easily

Were there possessions they did not wish to move the ball on?

Sorry but my anger is squarely at BK and the entire offensive staff. Anyone that had a hand in that gameplan and playcalling should be embarrassed.

I have no doubt this team will get better but we clearly need to stop scheduling these neutral site games because there’s a disconnect between the camp we’re running and being ready to play a real opponent out of the gate. It’s been the same issues in each game, you’re doing something wrong

You’re a moron. That offense last night would’ve put 50+ on our defense last year. Multiple times we needed a stop and the defense delivered. It’s the sorry arse offensive play calls that lost the game.

Bro they had 13 points going into the 4th. Gave the offense the ball twice up 17-13 saying here, go finish the game.

We did frick all.

Can't ask much more of the defense in game 1 with a new staff.

LSU loss the game with 7:40 to play in the 4th quarter. Of all plays we could have chosen, we run it up the gut, USC's strength.

Plus for a guy who hangs his hat on pressure, we maybe had a handful of plays with pressure.

Go rewatch the game. The pocket was collapsing every play and their OL was false starting every fricking play because of it. The officials missed several. That’s because they were trying to get a head start on the DL coming down their throat.

“USC didn’t score more because the game was not longer” might be the most retarded take I’ve read on tRant.

Idk if you’re hungover, but the defense was night and day from last year. Either you’re not letting yourself remember how bad they were, or you just don’t know ball. Holding Lincoln Riley and Miller Moss to 13 through 3.5 quarters is an incredible feat for a defense that was historically bad last year.

They made IMPACT stops when we needed them late in the game, and the offense repaid them by putting them back on the field in less than two minutes with no room for error.
