I’m feeling weirdly optimistic

Saturday felt like getting blindsided by your wife leaving a note on your fridge that she went to Cabo with the pool boy. My eyes were burning. My heart was bleeding.
BUT — logically, I know this team will get better. I don’t usually like to entertain excuses, but sometimes they hold water. Many of us refused to entertain the effect that the combination of a non-existent off-season + record-setting attrition, post-camp losses, and staff turnover could have on week 1.
People will argue this and that about other programs, but just think about the time those coaches had to build their brands in those places (that will not be named). Really wasn’t long ago Orgeron was tasked with righting what felt like a sinking ship.
What I’m hoping is that Bo got caught with his pants down — overconfident that state simply couldn’t and wouldn’t man up.
I’m encouraged by O’s candor and accuracy in acknowledging exactly what our problems were (lack of 2nd half adjustments on defense, decisiveness from Brennan).
Maybe this will be one of those wake-up calls. I don’t think we win out, but I believe we get much better + end this season on a positive note with week 1 a distant memory.

I agree. Getting stingley back creates a positive ripple affect in the secondary. Myles will be better.. and I hope Emery is used more on offense.

I’ll remain optimistic too, O was able to turn things around in 2017 after the Troy loss and getting blown out by State.

I feel the same way. Because I believe in Coach O. He will maximize to the fullest of whatever this teams has.

I honestly wonder if Bo watched any recent Leach film from Washington State? Washington provided the blue print, and it was vastly different than Bo’s approach.

Yeah, I was pretty melty over the past 48 hours but the optimism is coming back a bit. Still think 7-3 is the ceiling but I think Brennan will get better.

The bad game plan plus lack of contingency is easily the most disappointing part of this loss, but I will reserve judgement beyond a single season opener in a wackadoo year.
Maybe I wind up with my foot in my mouth, but I’m just not convinced we’re going to be terrible by this Saturday alone.

As far as I can tell, the defense will have four studs on D capable of making huge plays (Ali, Cox, Stevens and Stingley). The corners are young and will get better the more they play (Ricks had a really athletic pick in the game). Stingley basically almost shuts down one side of the field and will make a big difference being out there for the other guys and for the defensive results.
On offense, we have solid RBs, but it would be nice if one emerged as the long run threat. We clearly have big WR talent with Marshall, McMath, Gilbert (even though he is a TE), etc. They can play much better than they did. O-line will probably get better like the cornerbacks with more play. Brennan was mostly accurate and had some nice long balls, but he has to get rid of it a second faster and throw with anticipation. Those things usually get better with more time for many QBs. His speed getting out of a collapsing pocket may be an issue that you can't do much about, but I've also seen him move better than he did on Saturday. So overall, you can see the potential of how this team could improve significantly.

All of the other things mentioned are things that can be improved — and that usually do with experience.
The speed issue is all the more reason the guy needs to focus on learning to step UP into the pocket to extend plays instead of trying to Bo Nix it to the sidelines. Habitual bootlegging is a bad habit that keeps a lot of athletic QBs from developing pocket presence. I think the coaches are definitely aware of this after watching the best in the business put on a year-long clinic.

He righted the ship by making outstanding hires and getting Burrow. Right now we don’t have a legitimate SEC QB, a below average OC, and a questionable DC. I don’t see how too much can change this year. Sure they will get better with experience but teams like Florida and Bama will absolutely murder this squad right now. I truly believe O can make the right hires but will he is the question?

Still, Stingley will make a huge difference, but even with Stingley, this is the weakest secondary in at least 10 years. Vincent is sorely missed.
