If you like the Orgeron hire, you need to give props to Alleva

Alleva takes a lot of heat on this board, but he must have seen talent in Da Coach O that nobody else in College Football could see.
Despite national high level visibility for two decades, NOBODY in college football was trying to hire him as a head coach. Yet. Alleva not only saw that he was qualified to be a HC, but that he was the very best hire LSU could make, with its strong "top 10 program" reputation and financial ability to pay millions. Alleva must have a special genius, right?
If you like the hire, we got him for a FRACTION of other sought-after hires. O is now paid near the bottom of the SEC.

Can we just wait until the damn season starts to judge this hire?? Give it a break man it's January. We'll know more later there's no point in judging this hire right now.

O was Alleva's fallback plan, nothing more. I'm hopeful it works out.

why does anyone get any credit at all when there are no results to base your opinion?

was probably Plan G...but we shall see.

I hope O kicks arse next year just so I can stop seeing these stupid threads.

People thought Curley was a home run hire and the story of him ripping earrings out only solidified the fan base support. Yet he sucked as an actual coach without Favre. So let's wait until next January before we talk about what a great or terrible hire it was.

Honestly, people were saying that we settled, that this was the easy hire. I disagree. Because of O's past and because of the rabid, know-it-all armchair coaches, quarterbacks, and ADs that make up LSU's fan base, this hire, good or bad, was incredibly difficult. It's a gutsy move that could either redefine college athletics in terms of how coaches are hired or blow up several people's careers. We could've gone and overpaid for a PJ Fleck, Larry Fedora, DJ Durkin, or Mike MacIntyre and the fanbase would have been largely placated. But Aleva didn't, and by going with O, he's taking a massive gamble. Agree or disagree, it wasn't the easy hire and, if for nothing else, Alleva deserves credit for that. He hired the guy he actually felt could do the job.

I figured this would be a popular angle, since many want to simultaneously fire Alleva AND support the hire...
Also, those that want to pretend that no one is entitled to an opinion on the hire, have an uphill climb.
I hope for the best, but its hard to defend this "search" or this hire.
Hope is a bad strategy...

He didn't hire him because he saw hidden talent. He hired him because he botched the negotiations with the 2 targets we had and had not backup plan.

Now you know the only reason he hired O was because he got spurned by Herman and Jimbo. O was a fall back plan and that's it. It may turn out to be a fantastic hire and we will know in about nine months.

Coach O is already making about the same or slightly more than these guys and all of them (except for Durkin) have had more success as a HC thus far.
Money was obviously saved by not hiring Jimbo or Herman, but we didn't need to overpay for other viable options. Alleva just botched the hiring process.

ought Les Miles hired Ogeron, and Alleva just kept him.

i like the hire but don't credit Alleva.
People bitch about the coaching search but maybe they concluded O was better than bringing in a guy who wanted to bring in his own staff, or a guy who knew nothing about the recruiting grounds, or wasn't interested in coming to LSU...we just don't know how the search went and what coaches were on the list.
