re: If LSU doesn't make the playoffs this year is this a wasted season?

We’re probably not making the playoffs this year and even if we did we almost certainly aren’t winning a title but you can still have fun watching the games.

Kelly's worst "mistake" was going 9-3 in the reg season and winning a division title year one. For shits and giggles, say we go 8-4 this year with losses to Ole Miss, A&M and Bama. This place will be a shite show with 90% of the people here calling the season a failure (and I would agree). Flip this potential season with year 1 results and we are likely in the playoffs this year and Kelly has been "steadily building something".
As for as this year, if we go 9-3 and still miss the playoffs that would likely mean we went 2-2 against OM, Bama, A&M, and OU. I don't think a whole lot of people would call that a failure. Anything less, and yeah, it would suck.

I’ll always enjoy watching LSU play. When they go undefeated I enjoy it even more.
Yall gotta step back and realize how many teams would kill to have the past 25 seasons that we’ve had. We’re talking a program that has NEVER missed a bowl game and had ONE losing season. Look at every other major brand in that span. There’s many that had bad stretches.
Nebraska is begging to be relevant again begging for a bowl game. Let’s be grateful for having LSU.

If we perform well enough to maintain this 2025 class, successful season.

I don't know what a "wasted season" means
Last season was a wasted season. Terrific offense wasted by the worst LSU defense ever.

Yes. This year and every year after.
No way anyone can look at LSU, the tradition and the money and not expect a top 12-15 team every year. Understandable some years they are out of the top 12 due to injuries or whatever. Otherwise they should be there

Yes….. but I have accepted that NIL and the Transfer portal have absolutely trashed college football. Also we absolutely suck at retaining talent, and good coaches. ( Ga, Tx, Ohio state, Oregon and others ) are always good and always in the mix. LSU will be in the mix 1/2 times every 4/5 seasons.

Wanna bet?
It would be even MORE of a reason...we're competing for top talent and still can't make the playoffs? (Is what those folks would say).
you don't have christian fulton, stingley, delpit all on one team anymore.
that's the issue. we're not really able to stack dudes like we did when les was wasting offensive talent.
i guess we'll see with the 25 class, i'll check in after they're already on campus, can't do the blood pressure spikes of following "recruiting"

Next year's class looks really good. I guess the question is can we actually maintain those players long enough to add in more classes and build up talent.

100% yes for this season and every season with the expanded 12 team playoff.

Once we get things back to normal, I see the occasional runs at titles, just like we used to under Miles. There may be better gameday guys, but there will be years when we just have the best talent.
I'm not worried about this year, because I think big-picture we're in really good shape.
Great post but I agree the most with this. I want program sustainability. I dont want to win a natty and be an 8 win team for the next three years after that. I want to win a natty and see us reload like UGA. THAT is what I want for LSU.
If we stay patient with Kelly, by Year 6-7, I think you'll see us trending in that direction. This fan base has no patience.
