If J. Gilbert and Z. Alexander are starters . . . who else rounds secondary?

We had a National Champioship offense last year, but a Division II secondary. Unfortunately, there are no other reliable starters unless a young player steps forward. Of the list below, do coaches expect any below to make that leap:

Safety:
Kylin Jackson
Ju'Juan Johnson
Joel Rogers
Dashawn Spears

Cornerback:
Ashton Stamps
Javien Toviano
Woodland
Causey
Foster

Praying for an immediate impact type Delpit, Adams, or Honey Badger here or we are in trouble.

PJ Woodland should get a lot of playing time.

DT and our defensive backfield are going to be a severe weakness all year.

Agree with you on DT but at least DT has plenty of veteran depth that has been proven to be serviceable at a minimum. Although no ALL-SEC talent, they are at least average. The backfield on the other hand is putrid.

That secondary was way too bad to fall entirely on the players, coaching changes alone will be a big improvement.

Deuce Chestnut was freshman all-american and two time all ACC. Denver Harris was a starter for A&M as a true freshman on a stout defense (before suspension). Lots of talented incoming freshman. The transfer from Ohio State. I refuse to believe all of them were busts.

Let's hope you're right and coaching was at least 50% of the problem. And let's hope further that coaches can fix poor angles and lack of instincts. Not so sure about the latter.

I am not expecting miracle turnaround just yet but House's defense calls were way to complex for the talent and new players to absorb effectively. Thus we had a plethora of busted plays that made everyone look bad.

Zy Alexander will be a Top CB in the SEC by years end. Athletically he has the length and ball skills and he has tremendous intellect. As long as he’s ?? when the season starts, he’ll be our #1 DB

There’s going to be great competition in the secondary during fall camp. Zy probably won’t be ready to play until later in the season coming off ACL surgery. To me, Woodland, Stamps, JK Johnson, and Toviano our the top 4 corners. Gilbert, Sage, Kylin Jackson, Deshawn Spears are your two deep on the back end. I’m interested to see who steps up at nickel.

Kylin Jackson is the guy im most eager to see. I'm hoping he can take one of those safety spots and run with it. High time we had another hard-hitting monster on the back end ala Landry, Adams, etc.. think Jackson is next in that mold.

Kylin jackson should be ready to play. I think he’ll backup Mason Burns at this new star spot, and might have to be the backup at SS too(along with Toviano). The safety depth is concerning. Spears may have to get reps as well. Ausberry was running at the star in early spring, so he may see the field.

It sounds like Yaites transferred due to Jackson passing him. Though he would have saw time by default.

I know people are high on Woodland and maybe he will turn out to be a stud. But the truth is, starting as a true freshman corner in the SEC is an incredibly daunting task for anyone. Much less a 5'11, 160 lbs 18 year old.

I'm hoping Zy and Brown can step up while we work Stamps and Toviano in.

Stamps I think will be the best of the bunch this year, woodland will be the best long term I think.

In Think stamps is a brick house, if sage or burns keep blowing assignments wouldn’t mind seeing stamps there. Though I would also like burns at linebacker

Kylin Jackson is playing Star

And I wouldn’t exactly pen Zy as a starter just yet

Is Toviano playing CB or has he moved back to safety? I really like his potential.

If Zy is healthy, he's definitely starting. Atleast early in the season.

I'm more worried about CB than S. We don't have a single guy at corner that is a proven commodity in the SEC. Atleast at safety we know we have one legit started in Gilbert and some young studs in Jackson, Tovaino, Spears, etc.. at corner we just have some young guys that we hope can play at this level and Zy Alexander.

Anyone know what's up with JK Johnson? Is he healthy yet?

He is the most upset to me. He has some of the most potential but is so athletic they want him at cb in a pinch and I feel like he can’t lock down and 100% concentrate as a safety.
