I remember 4 corners with Dale Brown. I’m in my mid 50’s so I understand the Brown legacy.

I'm going to get down voted to hell but I am old enough to appreciate both Brown and Wade. Wish those 2 could have gotten along.

I've mentioned this before, but the odd thing is that Brown loved the Wade hire and said it was an A+ hire when when he was first was hired even after his boy Johnny Jones was fired. He couldn't have spoken more highly about his energy, recruiting ability and his fan recruitment. The video of him saying all of this is still online.

Brown and Wade did good things at LSU, but I think things went south for Wade when everything first blew up with the wiretaps and he decided to stop talking to LSU and his supervisors (which even Wade admitted was bad advice that was big mistake from the first attorney he fired). But I think that changed Brown's feelings on Wade (along with a number of other people at LSU). Wade later reflected on things saying he went about things in a brash way at LSU, so I don't think that helped him too much as time went on.

As an elementary school kid, the 1981 Final Four team was the first team I became a fan of, and Dale Brown was my hero. But my dad never liked the guy, and I couldn't figure out why. Dad always referred to Dale as a "snake-oil salesman".

I brushed it off for a long time, but as I got older I learned that my old man once again had a good sense about the character of others.

While on the outside Brown appeared as the underdog, he also has a mean and sinister side. If you ever crossed him, he would make sure you regretted it.

He treats the people in his inner circle well. It's why you see Brando and Temple standing up for him.

But if you aren't in the circle, he has no use for you.

I can promise you he has no respect for womens basketball. I recall reading an account of a time around 1979 or so when the women played before the men and the women's game went into OT. Brown made them stop the game because he didn't want it to interfere with the men's game start time.

I forgot how it was resolved...the women may have finished in the aux gym or waited til halftime of the mens game.

Point is, I heard numerous accounts of the type of person Brown was behind closed doors. He never should have had his name put on the court.

If this ordeal has caused him health issues, them that is too bad. But that isn't LSU's problem.

However, if honoring Sue Gunter, who was widely respected and thought of as one of the better women’s basketball coaches of her time, seriously bothers him, then frick him.

I have to say I'm surprised Dale was so strongly against this. It has been reported that Dale was approached privately on this early on and was very upset at the prospect.

I then read here that he did not like or respect Gunter - something I had never heard. I was around when they both coached and had thought they had a good relationship.

Therefore, my expectations before hearing all this was Dale might have said something like "I'm honored to have Sue's name alongside mine on the court."

I mean that would have diffused all of this and kept Mascona, Brando and Dick in their cages and would have prevented this whole embarrassing episode.

As one who is totally ambivalent to whether or not Dale's name or anyone's on the court, I guess I underestimated how important this was to Dale and therefore his minions.

It took a long time and much fighting and maneuvering to get it there in the first place. Dick has been railing on about it for at least ten years.

I understand the anti-woke aspect of it, along with the distasteful politics, but with all the real issues in the world today was this really the hill to die on?

Neither one deserve it. The criteria for a stadium or court being named after you should not be diminshed. It’s like lowering the standards to get into the HOF in pro sports. I have enjoyed how worked up and pussified Moscona and Brando have looked this week.

How about we go back to calling it “the basketball court”?

Moscona is insufferable. He proves that if you put a monkey in the drive time slot, people will listen. His success is purely circumstantial and not talent. And they gave him a promotion to program director? I quit listening to his slot on ESPN a year ago. Too many good sports podcasts out there that I can Bluetooth in for the ride home.

Dale Brown built the basketball program. Without Dale the basketball program would be lower than UC Santa Barbara.

Sue Gunter intentionally sabotaged Dale during the Lester Earl fiasco and in some other areas.

Moscona should thank his lucky stars for Richard Condon. If it wasn't for Richard, Moscona wouldn't be where he is today. He was just a producer who was allowed to chime in but Richard helped him along. I can't stand listening to Moscona. Thank goodness for XM radio.

His Freak Defense also was revolutionary at the time. I remember students camping out days before every single game during his tenure and the enthusiasm he brought locally, nationally, and internationally to LSU.

bullshite. Total lie. Johnny was reckless during the Earle incident and it bit Dale. Sue had nothing to do with it.

Dale has done more good things for more people than I ever will in my lifetime. But as you allude to if he saw you as against him he could be ruthless.

As one who grew up along with Dale - my first tangible memories of LSU basketball were started in his second year in 1973....I've read and heard about as much as anyone on the man.

The No. 1 motivating factor in his life was his love for his mother and his lazer like focus to protect her honor against anyone who he saw as a threat to her.

It's a recurring theme that comes up in almost any serious interview with Dale, often times coming up without prompting.

She was a meek and mild person and Dale her protector. The enemy was his Father and governmental or regulatory agencies that he saw as taking advantage of her meek nature.

Kentucky and the NCAA became symbols to him for the same type of forces that he had fought against in his early years protecting his mother's honor.

He often tells the story of the building superintendent where he lived as a child with his mom reprimanding her for allowing then a young Dale to run around in the hall marking up the floor with his shoes. Dale said then he spend the whole rest of the day dragging his shoe heels on the floor marking them up as much as possible. No one could talk to his Mom like that.

He strove to help those he saw as the helpless like his Mom and lashed out against anyone he saw as a threat to them....with as much passion on either side of it.

So it did surprise me a bit that a man who could be a giving and selfless as he was in some aspects of life would be so adamant in opposition to being selfless in this situation.

But in retrospect maybe I should not have been. I think maybe he sees himself in the role of his own mother here being taken advantage of, and himself being helpless.

First I'm hearing of this, though Dale IMHO has his own demons to answer to in that saga.

Never should have been named after a coach that never won a NC to begin with especially when you now have Kramers mom as coach…

This indicates you are too young to understand what Dale Brown did for LSU basketball. Dale made LSU basketball a national Brand. Ask John Brady.
