I think I’ve come to realize that we’ve never been a truly “elite” program

Downvote me all you want, but it’s true. We’ve had blips of success under multiple coaches, but to be “elite” means to be consistently winning at a high level over the course of 5-10 years with no letting up in progress. We have yet to have that kind of success. All of our previous coaches, excluding Saban, fell off of a cliff after they won their national championships. They crashed hard and were never able to recover. People on here can act like we have these high standards, but the truth is that this is nothing new. We’re all used to this. It’s sad, but that’s been the history of this program. LSU football has always been up and down, but never been able to stay winning consistently at a high level for us to be considered “elite”. That’s the way it currently is and that’s probably the way it’s always going to be.

It’s not true but everyone understands the hyperbole that comes from watching your team melt down in spectacular fashion

Besides bama, LSU is the only team to win 3 Natty's in this century. To you, that may not be good. But what does that say about the other 118 teams.

You must have missed the three National Championships in the last 20 years.

I posted something similar the other day. Basically, up until Saban we were a good, not great program. Aside from the Dietzel title, we had some really good seasons and a lot above average fluff.

Saban changed the game, and we were elite from his tenure until the end of Orgeron.

We are in a new era with NIL. Can we remain elite? Do we have the $$$?

I'd rather have the championships that some of the "elites" don't have even if that means having some down years along the way.

With that said the gap between 07' and 19' was a long one that's why 11' was so heartbreaking. And now crazy as it seems 19' was already 5 years ago

LSU is as good as it gets outside of Alabama. They’re the only team with more championships than LSU this century. Everyone else has less.

TBH the problem we have with NIL right now is too much of it, not too little of it.

Yep

IMO, you could expand it from '01 to '11:
5 SECW ('01, '03, '05, 07, '11)
4 SEC ('01, '03, 07, '11)
2 Nattys ('03,. 07)
1 Runner Up ('11)
7 Top-10s ('01, '03, '05, '06, 07, '10, '11)

You guys are kings of overreaction. This team was ranked in pre-season top 20 because of players that are either injured or turned out to be not as good as expected. Your overreaction after a big win or after a loss are just too much.

National championships shouldn’t be the only measure of whether or not a team is “elite”. Consistency should also be a factor as well. And when I say consistency, I mean going to NY6 bowls/CFP for 5 years.

LSU is a top 15 program historically.

Since 2000, top 10, but all things eventually average out.

Almost every sport on earth has elite teams, and historical winners that occasionally rise ip and become elite for a short time.

We are a solid historical program but not an Alabama, Ohio St, Texas, Michigan, type program over time

No it's not. You're a delusional idiot and need to stop betting on college sports.

Since 2000, I believe we have as many if not more national championships than any other team not named Alabama.

Kinda the story of the State of Louisiana in a nutshell - expensive mediocrity.

If Louisiana could get to mediocre it would be an upgrade.

LSU is a 9-3 team that catches lightning in a bottle every 5 or 6 years. Nothing wrong with that.

Not elite though.
