the mascot originated from the Louisiana fighting Tigers civil war batallion, but when did the breed get specified? Or is it just an unofficial nickname without any basis?

the Bengal Tiger in Louisiana Military Heraldry dates back to 1838 with the formation of the Washington Artillery of New Orleans (which per Peter Finney and Dan Hardesty) was one of the units the University got the name from...

if you look at the details of the crest of the 141st Field Artillery, you will see the tiger in the crest is a Bengal Tiger

There are only 2 distinct species of Tigers. (Bengal and Siberian)

Bengal's are predominately gold and Siberian's white.

BTW, the former solitary confined Mike was a Bengal/Siberian Hybrid.....

You're right, we should be the LSU Siberian tigers. We should get a Siberian tiger as a mascot. It just doesn't fit here. Plus, the sigfreid and roy jokes would abound if we did could you imagine that shite.Idk the history behind the Bengal tiger but it fits and I'm sure there's a reason why.

This.

It's the Tigers or the Fighting Tigers. No breed specified.

This is totally incorrect. There are 11 recognised Tiger subspecies (within a single modern species, Panthera tigris), with 5 of those recognized as extinct today.

The famous white tigers represent a recessive trait that has only ever been found among Bengal tigers. Important to note it is not the same as albinism. The variant has never been recorded in Siberians except in hybrids with Bengal blood.

The normal color for both Siberians and Bengals are reddish-orange with black stripes. The only "gold tigers" are lighter orange with faded stripes and are the result of yet another recessive trait (far rarer than the white trait in Bengals).

Louisiana (not necessarily LSU) has another tie to the tiger. The Flying Tigers of WWII fame were formed and led by Claire Chenault who grew up in Gilbert, LA. His descendants still travel to China on a regular basis where they are treated like royalty for defending Asia against the Japanese invasion.

Nerd alert.................

Just sit back and watch the pocket protectors, horned rim glasses and asthma inhalers fly as they sort out this conundrum!
