They're believed to be bad luck when we wear them with gold helmets and pants.

There's no superstition associated with white, purple, white, however

2015 vs South Carolina. Steve Spurrier tried to psyche out the LSU team be traveling to Baton Rouge in their white unis, and ended up resigning the same day after Fournette and Guice sliced and diced his team to a three touchdown defeat.

LSU had a record of 45-32-2 at home in the twelve seasons (1983-94) they were mandated by the NCAA to wear color jerseys at home. Not terrible, but not very good considering LSU football's famous home field advantage. Included was a dreadful 9-16 record in Tiger Stadium during the four years of Camp Curley.

The LSU football record at home has been much, MUCH better since 1995, when Gerry DiNardo "took a notion" and brought back the MAGIC! Thanks Mr DiNardo-- job well done by a ragazzo from Brooklyn!

Only "home" game I've missed since 2004. Was on a cruise in the Bahamas when the rescheduling was announced.

My first games were in the late 70’s and I remember when they started wearing purple. My old man and my grandparents hated it. Because apparently it was some stupidstition that they weren’t lucky. But honestly, the 80’s saw some damn good teams and we went major bowling a bit. Unfortunately there wasn’t much continuity with coaching.
Stovall was really not a very good coach. Decent guy just in over his head.
Arnsparger would have been a Nick Saban but for UForfeit offering him the AD position. Then we sucked again with Archer and then the shitshow that was Hallman.

Hint it wasn’t the damn purple jerseys.

For me, home games always are burned in my brain as yellow purple yellow. I know that’s unpopular but it took decades for me to accept the yellow white yellow. I’m good with it. It is tradition, but for us GenX 80 something folks throwback to a yellow purple yellow won’t kill anyone.

Curious to see how that plays out next year. Technically we would be in Purple against UCLA, as they are a home OOC but not the home opener.

In 2006 we opened the season at home to the Ragin Cajuns, wore white, then the following week, we played Arizona at home and wore white. So the tradition has some wiggle room.

Also in 2008, against North Texas, as we opened against Appalachian State.

Purple jerseys with gold pants and helmets have not really led to great results on the field in Tiger Stadium.

The purple jerseys look better in my opinion. It’s also what they had to wear due to the change in rules, as noted above, when I became a fan and when I was in college so I have a bias toward the purple jerseys. I never understood nor bought in to the whole white Jersey tradition. In my opinion Dinardo put way too much effort in getting that rule changed.

Was that the game we wore purple pants also?

No, that was against UK in 95. Howard was injured and they had not decided to turn Herb Tyler loose yet, so Melvin Hill started at QB. We lost in a pillow fight against a bad UK team, so those awful pants never saw the light of day again. I believe they were auctioned off to raise money for charity or something.

I know this because me and some friends took a road trip up to Lexington for that one thinking it would be a blowout. Most of their “fans” left early to get good seats for Midnight Madness, which was that night. That should tell you how much they cared about football at the time.

Same reason the Cowboys do it; we have an awesome uniform that we wear every game and it has established a fantastic brand.

That is easier to swallow than the fact that we were too cheap or stupid to hire good football coaches except for Arnsbarger. Stovall was an ex-LSU legend working for the Athletic Department when Bo Rein died, and Carl Maddox (AD) walked down the hall after the funeral and said "Jerry you want to coach?"

A long, long, long, long time ago the home team wore "light" colored jerseys and the visiting team wore "darker" colored jerseys. The darker collared jerseys were called the traveling uniform
