Thanks for the info. I’m gonna let Greg Ballard know because when I talk to him today, that’s not what he said so I’m sure he’ll appreciate the update.

Kiffin would only leave if the Bama job opened up. Other than that happening he will be a Rebel and have them at least in the hunt for the playoffs most years. He's at the top when it comes to working the portal and nil.

You LSU fans always sell yourself short.

ESPN pundits say LSU might be the number 1 job college football. It’s at least Top 5 if not #1.

You have pretty much the same resources as Bama.

Thanks for the info.

This is a wall of text. If interested in the musings of a fan who’s been around a while read on. If not, last two paragraphs are the gist. Recording my thoughts for posterity.

The thing for me is that in every search since Saban left there’s been the general consensus that LSU could cherry pick and get the best coach it wanted, whoever that might be. But it always feels like that never quite happens.

Miles was an underwhelming hire at the time. (“Del Rio is meeting with Skip today! It’s happening!”) I think we can all agree he turned out to be a good hire and had a ton of success, including a NC. It ended on a sour note, but overall it worked out well. If not for the Bama mulligan NC in 2011 he’d likely be viewed a lot more highly.

Orgeron was a crushing hire to me at the time. Especially after going to bed thinking we were hiring Herman, then waking up to news that a PC was set to announce O. For the 5 years spent we got to experience the greatest LSU team of all time, so in hindsight it turned out fantastic from that perspective. But of course it resorted to the results most expected when he was hired and left the program reeling.

Finally with Kelly, that is the closest we’d come to reeling in the “white whale” (I hate that term, btw). He wasn’t someone on the radar mostly and not a first choice for many fans. But Kelly was an objectively huge get at the time considering his achievements from a W-L perspective and coming from ND. It stirred the hell out of a lot of people. Ironically enough it ended up being the least successful of the post-Saban hires, and here we are.

This go round I’d be excited as hell if somehow we end up with Kiffin. I just think it’s more likely he ends up staying at OM or going to UF than to LSU. Not necessarily because I think he prefers UF to LSU, he may. I just feel like it goes in another direction.

All this to say, my gut tells me it’ll end up being someone other than a big name like Kiffin, or Lanning, Freeman, etc., etc. And I’m fine with that because I’ve seen it work out.

Someone like Kenny Dillingham (going to state of AZ for a coach has worked well for us!), Lea or Key seems more likely. (It’s amazing how many top names are at their alma maters.)

So we’re not at all learning out lesson from the Brian Kelly hire. We’re just gonna go all in on big names and not even give up and comers a look?

Short sighted move man I hope your source is wrong I wouldn’t mind Kififn at all but in a coach search you have to open to every possibility you can’t be close minded what is up with this program’s obsession with chasing big names

I continue to not understand the timing around hiring lane kiffin between signing day and the portal. Sure he’s my favorite candidate by far but the timing on this is going to be way tricky.

You can’t honestly believe this or are you that stupid? There’s not ONE PERSON outside an ole Miss fan that doesn’t think LSU is a much much much better coaching job than Ole Piss. And even most logical ole Miss fans would admit that

Kiffin is gonna cost $12-14 million per year with a minimum 5-8 year guaranteed contract. I can't imagine giving out such a stupid contract like that this year.

Count me among those who do not understand the hardlegging for this guy.

I have no insight or information, but it seems the Kiffin window closed when NIL blossomed. They paid for a nice team this year, and I frankly don't think there's anything he can do at LSU that he can't do at Ole Miss. I also don't think Ole Miss will be outbid for him. Folks around here seem to think LSU can get anyone they want, but it's just not true.

Look at Woodward's history. If he's the decision maker, I expect that pick to be completely out of the blue like Kelly was (and Jimbo before him). No reason to think the ending to the Fisher or Kelly eras will make him guy-shy about making a hire like that.

The key, obviously, is that his next hire will be his last unless it turns out like Jay Johnson.

Yeah well lane just seems too obvious, IIRC, BK wasn’t even on the radar a few years ago when everyone was saying we were about to hire tom Herman or whoever it was. Then out of nowhere comes Brian fraud Kelly. It’ll be someone we aren’t even talking about I’m sure

And them saying no G5 coaches is very short sighted. That also tells me they won’t consider a coordinator.

Those 2 are not the same…

The best coaches in the college football are P5 coordinators not prior G5 coaches

Totally agree. I don't understand the Kiffin or bust people. We just got burned giving a big contract to an attractive name so we're going to... give an even bigger contract an attractive name? I don't mind Kiffin but it's stupid to say we have to chase a big name

You don’t pass on your 1st choice coach bc the timing for the 1st year sucks.

I’ve heard Sean McVey has interest by people that would know. Not saying he will be the guy but he expressed interest before the Vsndy game.
